He said in the interview he will be running track and cross country in college, not the triathlon. He also said he will announce his college decision in the next few weeks.

Also liked what his coach had to say,
"Lukas doesn’t fear his competition, he craves it. He doesn’t hope to win, he expects no other option to occur. He understands that he wins all these races not when he toes the line, but in the heat of summer and in the pre-dawn hours when he’s training for them, months beforehand."
One more notable thing, he has NEVER lost a high school cross country race.
Time for him to go hit up the malls and buy some Louis Vuitton LV gear
that quote sounds like something ivan drago's coach would say. finish it with, "he weeel bdrake yoo", though.
Ok I'll be a dick and predict that there won't be much upside here in college given the full time training program the parents have had him on in high school. In fact there might even be downside once he's out from under moms thumbs.
wonder if parents will get out of the wway at one of the "powerhouses", but vin has already showed he is willing to just sit back and collect those NCAA points (see Salazaar/Rupp/Vin arrangement)
hadn't this already been established?

Bingo.
No. Before he had planned on waiting till after indoor to decide if he will run or do the triathlon, and he wasn't going to decide on a college until May.
His triathlon training was helping him and his aerobic base. I also don't see a problem with him competing in both. Oh well.

I would guess that he will still continue to cross train a lot in college... he just isn't planning to compete in triathlons anymore. With college running consisting of being in season year round, I frankly don't see how focusing on triathlons at any point during the school year will be possible.
Summary: he should continue the cross training, but bag the triathlon competitions.
Well.
The triathlon isn't an NCAA sport and so he won't get a scholarship for it. No free education.
He will only get a free education if he competes in an official NCAA sport. Here is a list of them at the bottom of this page, including track/CC:

He made the right choice for his future.

There are tents cities everywhere in America now, thanks to the Obama Depression, and if you point this out, you're a racist. At least Oregon isn't California, that state is a complete bankrupt, third-world joke now, as are all the liberal population centers.
a filthy 4-year running campground in the backwoods.

Obama's depression?
and yeah good thing all the republican states are the ones using all those programs that the liberal states are paying for... my states liberal and doing just fine. not everything is political.
Yes the economy was growing at 4% per year until January 2009, right? The recession had been going on for 13 months by then, and it was already the deepest recession in the post-war era, with a forecast (made in the fall of 2008) of unemployment averaging close to 10% through 2010.
Sad to hear with my passion in triathlons!

While I obviously am glad Lukas seems to be moving in the direction of devoting his athletic focus 100% on running in college, there is some misinformation in the post I quoted that deserves clarification.
It's true that Triathlon is not an NCAA sport, but it's not true that you can't get a scholarship for non-NCAA related athletic pursuits. Some colleges give scholarships for Cycling (not an NCAA sport). Some colleges choose to not be part of the NCAA (or NAIA) system and therefore have the ability to give athletic scholarships for whatever they choose. Check out Alaska Pacific for skiing as an example. I would not be surprised if some colleges have scholarships available for Triathletes. While there is certainly more $ available for traditional athletic scholarships connected to the sports NCAA sponsors, there is scholarships money available "outside the system".
As far as "the right choice for his future", it's going to be very interesting to watch his development the next 4-6 years and see if he ends up primarily as a runner or primarily as a triathlete. With pro triathlon (non Ironman distance) being primarily draft legal now, the strongest runners have a big advantage. I could see Lukas having a successful college running career but with the idea being that by focusing on running for 4-5 years he will be an even better pro triathlete after college.
My guess is that the biggest obstacle to LV's future progress as a distance runner will be the "college triathlon": parties, women, and freedom.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
