Marathon Pr is 2:13
WR for 50k is 2:43:38, and is roughly equal to a 2:15 peformance.

Didn't he get chicked at Comrades?
Didn't you get chicked at every road race?
He had stomach cramps and dehydration. If all goes well he should get the record, but imo it's a soft world record as far as world class performances go.
His eyeliner ran better.

What race is he running? Or is another pre-fab/add-on thing like in Arizona?
I believe he will do it like the last time he did 50k at the RNR Arizona. He will run the marathon and then run the last 7.9 K (approx) on the track with special 50k finish line set up. He did this (or something very similar) when he set the 50k US record a few years back. Anyone have better details?
1996 olympic champion josiah thugwane had planned to run the first 30-35k of the loskop 50k, he went through the half marathon in 1:08:48, then when he got to 30-35k he had over a 3 minute lead and he felt good, he ran the 2nd half marathon in 1:05:49 for a marathon time of 2:14:37 he felt easy so he continued and ran 2:44.03
I think that is the case as well
he should focus on the marathon and train for the trials instead of doing these gimicky things
He'll need to be in 2:13 shape to have a shot. Everyone should have a goal, so good for him. I'd even buy his setting a "road" record with a significant portion of the race on a track.
My main caveat would be that, to meet the "bona fide" competition requirement for records, other runners should be given the opportunity to run that last segment on the track as well, and I don't believe that is the case.
50k training is pretty much marathon training isn't it? It's not THAT much longer to signifigantly change training
I just realized the redundancy in my thread title lol.
The only difference in training is that you do a longer long run, say 30 miles.
This actually serves as a useful and positive training cycle for someone competing in the Olympic Trials.
People complain about his 'gimmicky' stuff, but Cox is easily one of the most recognizable marathoners in the country because of these things.
This is better, from a professional stand point due to sponsorships, than taking 14th place at the Boston Marathon.
Kudos to Cox for making a living doing what he loves.

One or two reasons it is a soft record is that it was run as part of the Two Oceans (56kmm race, so not just a 50k) and that is a pretty tough course having to go up Chapmans Peak (~590ft over 3mi) and Constantia Nek (~700ft over `3mi).
Thompson Magawana RIP was a 2:10 marathon type when he set that record on route to the current Two Oceans record.
I hope that he gets it!
I agree. Cox is making a living what he loves and would do for free. Good luck J
Anyone know if the race will be broadcast live?
no doubt he will be tweeting, facebooking and generally pestering us on a minute-by-minute basis about this. How well does guyliner stand up during a 50K, I wonder?
Was his 50k AR ever ratified? Wasn't he the only entry in his "I'm adding onto the marathon" 50k? Last I heard you need a certain number of starters to count. Also, what the 50k course ever certified?
I know USATF lists him as the record holder but has this ever been verified?
