Raw speed is the LAST thing to come back when returning from injuries. Give it some time, chief.
Wait...isn't it called "raw" speed for a reason haha
Hopefully he didn't lose it with his muscles
I am starting to think Salazar is a scam coach.
Doesn't Salazar usually gets runners with already alot of base and transforms them quickly with his faster quicker stuff?
Alan Webb doesn't fit the mold. Alan didn't have good base since he ran XC in 2006? Alan was burned out from all the speed stuff from 2007 foward. Has he been working on base all this time with Salazar or faster quicker stuff?
Guys, c'mon! give Alan Webb a break! Watch the video, and you can see that the conditions of that 800m race look like a high school dual meet! not making excuses for the guy but it's been awhile so chill and i guarantee you he will be back 0wning the tracks. just a question of how soon.
That is a long way to go to run a 1:51 800. You could of done that in his own backyard.

No, I don't think I could "of" done that in Alan's backyard. I run ultras.
Rupp had plenty of awful races (and will probably have more), but most will agree it's ultimately "part of the plan." After the surgery and rehab, it's good Webb can just get out there and run.
Don't trash Webb and Salazar's coaching from one race.
I actually thought he looked pretty good in the race believe it or not. The way he couldn't shift gears or get out hard showed that he obviously had no speed training. Despite looking totally flat in the speed department he looked pretty strong. He's been training with a 27:10 guy trying to get his strength back up. Jumping in a race and running around 1:50 is a pretty solid effort for him. He's going to be legit again.
It was his first race back from injury. Salazar probably had him to a 95% effort (just a guess on my part). I used to do these back when I raced especially if I was coming back from an injury or illness. Low key, not all out.
Just the first step back.
I'll admit that I was disappointed with Webb's 1:52, as I was secretly hoping he was further along than Salazar had led us to believe. But after a lot of time off following his surgery, and having not raced in quite some time nor done much speedwork, a 1:52 in poor conditions really doesn't sound that bad.
The talent is obviously there and he's only 27. If he sticks with it and believes in Salazar's plan, I have to believe he'll come back around by 2012. But he has to believe it. With all the Webb hatin' around here it will be a sweet, sweet day when he finally puts the hammer down and shuts everyone the hell up.
I wrote a bit on this on the blog, but I think considering all the changes that Webb has endured recently and the limited training he's had it's very premature to write him off. Also, an 800 is one of the hardest events to come back to if you are rusty and haven't raced in a long time. To run a good 8, you need to have sharpness and feel comfortable at high speed. Webb has been doing bits and pieces of Rupp's workouts and hasn't raced in ages. 55 second pace probably did not feel nearly easy enough because of this.

until his first bad race
You wanna know what's kinda funny? Webb's average 800m pace in his 1500m pr was actually slightly faster than what he ran just recently. But I still believe it was a workout.
Webb is a great runner. He's gone through some rough times. Lots of critics out here who have never seen his type of accomplishments on their own. I for one say yes, give the guy a break. I hope Webb gets his "sealegs" back and kicks some butt in the near future. Good Luck Webb!
1:52 probably means he can run about a 4 minute mile.
To be able to break a 4 minute mile first race back after an 18 month layoff, surgery, and in a crappy race isn't all that bad.
He hasn't had a good performance in a long time, but too many people are counting him out way too early.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
