Is it beneficial for long distance runners to take protein shakes?
I drink a myoplex after workouts or long runs to help recovery, i guess i dont know how much it really helps but i feel like protein directly after the workout is important in getting the recovery process going
The downside is they will probably put on weight. They were vreated for people who want to gain muscle mass.

It's a good way to get extra protein into your diet, sure. Personally, I don't do protein shakes for the simple reason that I just don't like taking in my calories via fluids (I like eating food instead)--that said, I put whey in a ton of things that I eat, ranging from oatmeal and eggs in the morning to chili for lunch/dinner to ice cream for dessert.
If it makes you feel better than keep doing it. protein is essential via drink or food. wal-mart has best price.good luck

Protein is the macronutrient which is best at suppressing appetite which and contains the fewest de facto calories.
