What's to do in Rochester NY? I know there is or was an AHL franchise there (the Americans), but what other cultural amenities are available?
What running clubs are there?
Providing info to a relative who has to do business there.

Lots of small, nice restaurants in the suburbs surrounding the city. Bar scene is forgettable, but does exist. Dinosaur BBQ usually has good live music. GREAT running trails in Mendon Ponds Park, which is a short (less than 20 minute) drive from the city. Rochester Museum and Science Center always has something interesting, I think there's a travelling museum of video games going on right now, pretty cool. Biggest running club would be the Genesee Valley Harriers (gvh.net is their website) and there is a group called the Oven Door Runners who meet in Bushnell's Basin in Pittsford (just outside of Rochester) on Saturday morning for long runs at 6:30 AM, they have a pretty wide range of talents, minimum distance is usually 10, groups go as long as 17+. When will your relative be in the Rochester area? There's lots of stuff that happens on a seasonal basis.
Some good places for families:
Cordial Lounge, Klassy Cat, Mirage Palace, Rick's Tally Ho, and don't forget Barrel of Dolls Saloon.
