Please Please!!! Don't run in grad school. I just finished up my eligibilty last year and I realized wtf have I been doing this for? Once you finally hang em up your life will be so much better. To this day, I can't believe I devoted so much time to seeing how fast I could get around the track for 4 laps. I watch these flotrack interviews with guys barely getting by financially because they sacrafice everything to run times that aren't even that good. Its like their addicted or something, very few can make careers out of this sport, so almost any other endeavor is better. Do the best you can on your grad degree and run on your own.
Lots of people come up to me and ask me, "Does it ever bother you that you had so many injuries early in your career and you never maxed out your potential. You probably could of broke 4!!!" My reply: Sub 4 isn't anyhting nowadays(thinking to myself). And I rarely think in terms of what could I have run, rather I often think what could I have been if I never ran. Ladies and gents graduating with honors with a practical degree goes much further in life than graduating with a 3:46 1500 and psychology degree.
I really do think people continue running hundred mile weeks out of addiction rather than improvement. Or perhaps they are addicted to self improvement? But certain people take running to far and too seriously. My advice: Hang em up and get a life.
Alternatively, grad school gives you a lot of time for a hobby. Train for marathons on your own. It's not THAT time comsuming -- maybe 15 hours a week for half the year.
If you were a DI runner, you probably have a decent shot at 2:25 or so, and maybe even sub-2:20 if you have a little talent. You'll always be able to say you were an OT qualifier.
If you really felt that way about running after college, then I wonder how you will feel about posting on-line later in life?
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
