typically this becomes a team effort and much begins to depend on what you are doing so a generic book on "basics" would be difficult.
you would want to search on things like enterprise systems management, cluster management, enterprise architecture, enterprise architecture management, enterprise IT infrastructure, enterprise clusters and networks, etc.
managing enterprise systems is more of an ongoing project management "project" simply because of the resources that are involved and the coordination that it takes to manage them. mega systems often involves significant contact with and coordination of the hardware vendors, software vendors, contractors, network folks, business units and ultimately the end users.
so as a for instance, it is one thing to manage a network for a company with 10,000 employees, vs another system that is composed of a cluster of 1000 servers which do calculations or modeling, vs managing clusters of databases for a credit card processing company.
