LCD, lasts longer and doesn't reflect light
Look for yourself. But the answer to your question is LCD. I've conducted countless hours of research and compared HD tube, plasma, LCD, DLP (LED is new and expensive)...but not counting that, LCD is the answer for sure.
Neither...go LED!
Real answer is plasma for a darker room (think basement or room dedicated to home theater) or LCD for brighter room like a living room with lots of windows.
But plasmas produce better black levels and have a much better viewing angle. Not to mention the speed of refresh...oh, and they are less expensive :) Overall, much better image and value with a plasma. Shame that the producers "chose" LCD to ram down everyone's throat.
Since I have a dark room and sit over 10' from the TV, I went with a 50" Sanyo Plasma 720p last year. I don't regret it a bit.
It was $822 at Walmart and it has since dropped to $798:

If you're like me and have a dedicated room without windows or always-on lights and you don't sit RIGHT next to the TV, it's a great deal.
If you have very much ambient light or are going to play video games on the TV, then go with an LCD or LED...you're just going to have to pay a lot more.
LED prices have come down alot. I saw the 55" 120htz Samsung 7th series at Frys for $2299 instore only. For some reason, Fry's fluctuates the price between $2299-$3299 on this one.
What will adult entertainment look best on?
720p is old school. No one should pay over $500 for 720p.
Ha, I just noticed that the first reply to this was over 4 hours from the original post.
