Overall, and how about for track & field? How about for distance running?

Caster Semenya perhaps.
Maybe Santhi Soundarajan?
Not sure I can recall many others that were male and female.
Most famous male athlete: Hercules
Most famous female athlete: Delilah DiCrescenzo
Male overall - Muhammad Ali. We settled this in a thread a few years ago.
Female overall -Nadia Commaneche (gymnast-it's too early in the morning to spell), maybe Martina Navratilova
Whatsa friggin, whats his face...George something or an other and that bitch......
If I had to objectively stop quickly and come up with a name for each gender it would be Ali and Zaharias. However, I can understand where most 40 somethings and under would have no idea who "Babe" was and Pele might rival ali in certain parts of the world.
Zaharias ???
Pete Rose
Paula Radcliffe
track - flojo, carl lewis
distance - paula, steve prefontaine.
no way that michael johnson is more famous than carl lewis.
Overall - Muhammad Ali & ..... Princess Anne? (Queen's sister, olympic medalist, most people know her)
Track&Field excluding Distance running - Usain Bolt (yes I know we're talking about all time) & Fanny Blankers-Koen
Distance - Haile Gebrselassie (or Pre?) & Paula Radcliffe
People underestimate the popularity of Jim Ryun as a distance runner. If you were alive during his time, he was HUGE. To people who say Haile, I doubt it. He's my favorite but I guarantee very few people on the street know who he is.
Male: Pele. No questions. People here in the US don't understand how popular soccer is around the world. One teams merchandise sales, Manchester United, are more than all NFL, MLB, NBA teams combined. One team! Soccer is by far, BY FAR the most popular sport in the world. And no name is bigger than Pele's. Ali? NO, Jordan? NO. In the US? Sure, but not in the world.
I'm from the world, and Pele isn't more well known than Ali
Pele for certain I think. Though Ali probably gives him a good run for his money.
Bolt/Phelps/Woods/Federer are probably the most famous current sportsmen.
Female side is much harder- odds are on that it'd be track or tennis though (most prominent of the very few sports where male/female is on even a close to equal backing) making me think possibly the Williams sisters or Marion Jones. Radcliffe possibly up there but as a Brit distance runner might be a bit biased.
Overall:
Michael Jordan (Tiger is up there)
Mia Hamm
Distance:
Prefontaine (Rupp is up close)
Shalane Flanagan (at the moment Radcliffe)
i don't know who Pele is.
Distance:
Prefontaine (Rupp is up close)
Shalane Flanagan (at the moment Radcliffe)
Rupp and Flanagan doesn't belong in same sentence as Paula and Prefontaine...

Most famous of all time? Rupp? Flanagan? Are you on drugs? More people know of Zola Budd, guaranteed. Slaney too. Man on the street has no idea who Flanagan is, maybe Radcliffe. Outside of running world, very few know who Rupp is.
Prefontaine is not famous outside America. Only hardcore track enthusiasts outside America have heard of Prefontaine.
Most famous sportsman of all time will be a soccer player. Pele or perhaps Maradonna for the win. Ali will be close.
Most famous sportswoman might well be Nadia Comeneci or Olga Korbut or perhaps Martina Navratilova.
Most famous track + field male athlete is surely Carl Lewis, although Usain Bolt is closing.
Most famous track + field female athlete could be FloJo or Marion or perhaps Paula Radcliffe.
Most famous male distance runner has to be Sebastian Coe (let's face it, distance runners are not famous - nobody apart from track enthusiasts have heard of Haile or Wanjiru, much less Bekele)
Most famouse female distance runner has to be Paula Radcliffe. (She is one of few distance runners that is known outside distance running circles.
Most famouse female
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
