great point
that's ritz exczallily
What makes you think Ritz thaught he could beat Bekele? Nothing in that interview indicated that. He said he was thinking 13:0?
"I don't have quick foot turnover, but, you know, that's stuff Alberto says we're gonna work on. And you know, hopefully ... I still closed pretty good today, and so if I can just keep working on it I can get to the point where hopefully next year I can go with a race like that and just, I can just sit with Bekele and outkick him maybe."

how do you know what the other competitors were thinking?
He has to quit using the "you know".
Makes him sound illetirate/dum/stoopid.
ET
I don't see anything in this thread that says it had to be this year.

you can tell by the way they raced...
I didn't see Soi make a move to try and beat Bekele
When Ritz went through the bell he was about 2.5 seconds back from Bekele with not only the AR in his back pocket but a ton of adrenaline in him.
the only way you beat a Bekele is if you are hauling and he is rigging. Won't see that in a 12:52 race. Bekele could have blazed that last lap, but he is still sort of in recovery mode, saving himself for the last jackpot race.
The other way to beat him is when he forgets a lap count.

Probably the word "thought", which is past tense.
I can't believe you think Ritz is the only person in that race that thinks/thought they could/can beat Bekele.

well i think what he meant was that ritzenhein was maybe the only guy in the field making up ground on bekele, even though he was still pretty far back. soi was up there too but at the beginning of the last lap ritz kept charging and started to pass soi and pull away from him a little, meanwhile everyone else was either fading and had worse chances of beating bekele than ritzenhein did. so for a moment, ritzenhein was the only guy who would've had any chance of catching bekele, even though it wasn't really a realistic goal. but who knows- if salazar can train rupp to go from running a 4:02 mile to a 3:57 in one year, i imagine he can get ritzenhein to improve his leg turnover as well.
