I'm from the deep south, but have had the opportunity to travel across most of the west (including Tx). I will just point out one thing about the cultural differences (and this is certainly a generality): Out west, pretty much everybody has an ancestor in the relatively recent past who took the initiative to come there on purpose, often at great risk (or they did so themselves). Back East, there are lots of people who, for whatever reason, did not (although of course SOMEBODY had to get on the boat to leave the old world). In my native south, there are also a lot of people who, through no fault of their own, were brought there against their will. Whether you're talking self-reliance, manners, or even just the service you get at a McDonalds, there was a noticable improvement in quality west of the Mississippi, and a clear drop-off on the way home.

On another front, I think most letsrunners will agree that winning is good for morale. Texas actually won "their" war. We South Carolinians lost "ours" (which was for the best, but it explains some of our southern pathologies).

Finally, and I know I'm likely to be in the minority here, but the first time I ever drove across west Texas, I loved the geography. The eastern part may as well have been SC or GA, just pine trees. But I had never seen desert before. I guess if that was all you ever saw, it would get old. But for me, it was a neat transition to the stunning beauty of the west. As my 91-year-old grandmother said (a transplanted Texan), "that's part of the world that God made and then forgot about."

I'm a Texan. I too think west Texas can be beautiful. Places like Abilene and Midland can be a bit monotonous with the endless mesquite trees, but even out there can be beautiful once you get into the hills and plateaus.

The Palo Duro Canyon is a place everyone should visit.

Also, the Davis mountains out west are beautiful and play host to the McDonald observatory, pretty neat place. Big Bend.

I'm going to check my flaunting of Texas by saying that several places are even more beautiful. Colorado, Utah, parts of Wyoming = amazing. Tenessee and Virginia/NC can be absolutely gorgeous if you're in the mountains.

I really wish I could visit more places out west like Glacier NP, Yellowstone (only went there as a baby), and whatever California has to offer.

Texas if far from the flat monotonous state like some people have described. Some states are definitely prettier. MANY states are definitely uglier (see Nebraska).

Yeah, and some of the worst food you will ever eat is in Texas. I've stopped at a couple of Diners that were full of people eating and highly recommended. I couldn't believe people were paying for slop like that.

And some of the best steaks I've had were eaten in Dallas and Houston.

Houston is a big, big city similiar to Chicago, Philly etc. but much newer. Does that make it better? No, just cleaner.

It's been this way since the beginning. These idiots pushed further and further west into Comanchera because of their ridiculous notion of manifest destiny. Texas rangers that people are so proud of were absolute scum. With idiotic perseverance, the colt repeating pistol, and multiple broken treaties with the Comanches, Texas was born.

I've got to second that. Texas is full of really great people. I like the local pride, which is missing in so many places. I'm a transplant, but I love it here. Sure, there's some bad apples here, or people from elsewhere resentful of the sucess so many Texans have had over the years, but that's to be expected.

Texas is a great cultural mix, a vital melting pot with big thriving cities that reminds me of what the now too dead to be successful cities of the East historically were and which the cities of the West never became. You come out ahead living in Texas, both socially and economically. People with dreams and a good work ethic move to Texas, which has grown dramatically in population over the last 30 years, while New York, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, etc. remained flat. There's oil here and great jobs in that and related industries. There's great hospitals here, great universities, and each attract bright people from around the world.

Oh, Texas also has great track and cross country programs, with teams among the best nationwide for high schools.

That song was written by a Texan who was born in New York.....Texas is the America of US states. Just like when the USA gets attacked from countries like Austria, Yemen, Iran, Venezuela etc. all small dog countries bad-mouthing the best country.

Most people around the world are proud of the country or region they just happened to be born in.

I'm more proud of coming from the north of England than I am of being English.

If I had been born 2 miles further south then I'm sure I would be proud to be Welsh.

Lived in 11 states (From Illinois), AS a Military man I was treated best in Texas! Texas people are most approchable, friendly, and down earth people I have come accross during my travels. Plus: The women there, especially the pretty ones are some of nicest people I have ever met. Coming home to Illinois was a big downer...sure miss Texas!
