Has anyone ever tried this? If you did it, what was your best time in an outdoor mile?
Also, did you run it without every holding onto the machine with your hands?

On the treadmill you can just jump real high a few times and "run" a 4 minute mile.
but for four minutes straight??? not likely. Try doing a basic plyometric routine and tell me if you think you could do it rapidly for four consecutive minutes
It would be much easier to do that than actually run a 4 minute mile outside though you might have to do some event specific training for it.
Is it easier than what, running it on the track? Yes, as it's like running with a 15 mph tailwind.
While a treadmill forces your legs to move, subconsciously everyone gives themselves "breaks" not keeping a constant pace so running a 4 minute mile on a treadmill would be out of reach even for the best milers in the world. Running outside would definitely be easier. I'm not saying running a 4 minute mile is easy at all. I bet it would pretty hard to find a normal treadmill at your local health club that would go that fast.
Where I work out our treadmills go to "11"
Here is a 4 minute mile on the treadmill.

I've admired your stupidity for a while now, such as your "gays cause aids" contributions on the sean penn thread, but this one is little too much. The "best milers in the world" couldn't run a 4 minute mile on a treadmill? Do you want to reconsider that? You really think that if we got Lagat on to a high quality treadmill he couldn't run 15mph for 4 minutes? Are you mentally disabled? If so, I apologize for making you sad.
I don't think I ever said homosexuals cause AIDS, but they're certainly more likely to get it than heterosexuals. I don't know if you're an activist, but that's just a fact. And as for running a sub 4 mile on a treadmill, don't know if you've heard of a guy named Josh Cox. With a road marathon pr of 2:13, he set a treadmill world record several years ago running 2:31. I'm sure he had a high quality treadmill, and that's a pretty big difference from road to treadmill. Ignorance is bliss my friend in your case.
marathon, mile, same difference right?
17 or 18 minutes is a pretty big difference. I don't know what exact correlation that has to the mile, but I think it shows that there's quite a difference between road and treadmill. I gave an example. I believe that's more than you did. I don't post much on here, but I'm seeing with own eyes for the first time the arrogance and idiocy of a few letsrun posters that I've heard so much about.
The thing with a treadmill is that by having a set pace (how about 3:59.99) you are always locked in on that pace. You don't have to worry about the slow up you get outdoors on the third lap when that bitch really starts to hurt. On the treadmill you just run baby. It could be done with ease by most sub 4 milers (assuming a nice treadmill). By the way, the treadmill marathon record is in the low 2:20s now.
And you believe that Josh was trying to run all out in his treadmill marathon? Please, he was just doing it for fun. I am sure at his peak he could run a marathon on a treadmill much closer to his PR. Plus when your running for over two hours on a treadmill the mental fatigue factor comes into play. But running for just less then four minutes it is not a problem. These things aren't linear.

you're overlooking the fact that treadmill running is boring. I am not surprised a marathoner would find it tough to keep up his best road pace for more than 2 hrs. I would be very surprised if a miler could not though.
Didn't Tom Cruise do this?
Has anyone on here ran an all-out mile on a treadmill? If so, how does it compare to your track pr?
I've always feel mentally burnt out after 2 miles on the treadmill, so I think running a 4 minute mile on a treadmill would be sweet, because the faster you go on it the less you are thinking about it hurting and the more you are thinking about staying on the damn thing so you don't get injured for real. I don't mind interval workouts on treadmills during the winter its just the long runs that kill
What kind of interval workouts do you do on the treadmill? Are the times you run anywhere close to times you run on the track?
Hey moron, do you legitimately know whether it is easier to run a sub-4 mile on a treadmill or outside? I'm a collegiate distance runner and I totally understand and agree with 3200guy. Your stride and mentality are totally altered when running on a treadmill. I really don't see it being easier. But hey, know-it-all, let me know how it goes for you.
