| What The Heck ?!?!?! |

Ok. As of now, 9:20am Pacific Time, the NCAA Division II West Regional Championships in San Diego, CA is going on. Apparently, for the men's race the biker went the wrong way on the course and had to double back, then things just got really messed up with runners inter-looping and everything. Supposedly they just stopped the race 20 minutes in and are having them re-run it. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Thoughts. |

Can anyone verify? If so, what time are they doing the re-run? |

The me will re-run the race and it is scheduled to start at 11:15. What a terrible mistake. |
| um? |

|
it was absolute mahem .. The leaders had to double back and then everyone was running into each other the leaders had to move all the way up through the rest of the field again and then they ends up coming by the 3 mile at like 17 min.. Then at about 3.5 mi they told everyone to stop .. Then start another 10k race at 11:15 |

I think it was in 1986 that the NE D-II Regional Men's race was similarly disrupted. It was hosted by Philly Textile at Fairmount Park and the top 40 or so were sent the wrong way. The results were voided. They did not re-run it, choosing instead to have a committee select all of the qualifying teams and individuals |

The bicyclist was on the TDF and is lanced, incoherent, and was arrested by campus police. That's all I heard. Girls were crying. Coaches were shoving runners to get to their athletes. It was one Chinese Firedrill. |

How was the open race? Do you know where the results would be? |

I like how it says after the "runners" made a wrong turn. Not we f***ed up and affected the results in the process. This race should not have been re run on the same day especially after more than half of the race had been completed. They should have waited until tomorrow to re run the race on the mens side. Hopefully UCSD never gets another region race. |

I would guess the kids from the northwest probably suffered a bit from the heat |

Yeah, I really don't think rerunning a race on a Sunday was going to work. You got to think of the travel and hotel plans for all the teams. I know that several schools were already pushed for time with the late finish. I know they were thinking of running a shorter course (6k-8k), but that could lead to other problems. Crazy day in San Diego. |

Look, if the men can't memorize a course this simple, it's their own fault. http://www.ucsdtritons.com/pics11/800/ZJ/ZJJXQNBYLSMALUQ.20081002195309.jpg?DB_OEM_ID=5800 |

Man, such a simple course. Could have done it with my eyes closed. Kudos to Bauhs for winning the 10-mile race. |

It isn't so easy to go the right way when the correct route is COMPLETELY BLOCKED by fans and the biker goes the wrong way. The home team website is full of crap when they said that the runners ran off course. Problems: 1) Lead bike went wrong way 2) Spectators completely blocking correct way 3) Course monitors not moving the fans and making sure people went the right way |

Uhmmm...the way I heard (kinda saw it since I was about 30 meters away) was the spectators had blocked the wrong way when a UCSD official said that the spectators were blocking the correct route. This person moved everyone off of the (incorrect) route so people could keep heading down the path instead of taking the correct right. People (some coaches included) were protesting this move but the official kept insisting this. The lead bike blew through. I heard some of the athletes thought the route was supposed to take a right and were confused at the intersection in question, but what do you do when the lead bike is going straight AND the officials are blocking the correct path (not the fans) because the officals aren't sure which way to go. There were a lot of fans on a narrow course, but like most races people were out of the way and looking at their maps to make sure they knew where the athletes were coming/going. There is no way this mistake can be placed on the fans. |

Going the wrong way happened just before mile 2. Look at the map. They missed the right turn at L and went straight instead. The right hand turned was completely blocked and the lead biker went straight. About 60-80 guys missed it (at least half the field). Then you have all of them turning around and trying to run back on course with the slower guys in their way. It was chaos. Mind you the trail was so narrow that only 2 or 3 wide could run on it. Runners getting trampled and others shooting through the woods. Eventually everyone was back on the right course but with the slow guys up front. I do not know how Bauhs and Cheseto worked back up into first but they must have went through the woods because they were leading again at 3 mile mark. They were in cruise mode until that point and then they just took off. Officials called the race sometime around when the leaders went up to the track to start the last loop near 6k. |

I was in the race in the top 20 at the time .. It was rediculous when we had to turn around .My mom was standing next to the part that we missed and she said it was the officials that had the flags in the wrong position (the position that it was suppose to be in the second time around) so then people just stood behind it, this blocking the correct path. A ucsd coach or track coach told her it's not the biker or the course officials fault for us missing it . That we should have known the course. But it didn't matter if we knew the course or not it was completley blocked by fans and flags! For the people complaining that the results are incorrect or unfair, just remember it was the same for everyone , the stronger teams were still able to hold it together and do well. |
