http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Marathon_Race#RaceRace starts at 30 ft elevation to 3022 ft. Over 1.5 miles. Usually a 40% elevation grade up. Extremely steep. There is little running actually on the way up, it's too steep. It's scrambling up trail steps.
Then 1.5 miles down on a different trail I think, allowing for running, a smoother trail.
Mt Hood race starts at 5,900 ft elevation compared to the 30 ft. Goes to 11,240 ft compared to the 3022 ft. The altitude is a major factor.
Mt Hood race is one way to the top, all the 3.5 miles is up. It's on snow and glacier. No real trail. Usually very cold and often windy. Often there is a potentially deadly crevasse at 11,750 ft elevation you have to go around and then climb above.
In the Mt Marathon race you can wear shorts and running shoes. Mt. Hood necessitates spiked footwear of some sort, usually light winter gear covering entire body, and an ice axe of some sort from 11,500 ft to the summit and back to 11,500 ft. Steep glacier, areas to fall, crevasse.
So a very different race.
