That is insane.
It's also not true.
That's not true. Bekele probably went through 8,000 metres in his world record in just over 21 minutes.
On a road course, the fastest ever is Peter Githuka's 22:02 from 1996 at the Crazy 8's race in Kingsport, TN.
I think Bekele split something like 21:04 during his 10,000 meter world record

Even pace is 21:01. So yes, he could break 21!! (I thought getting under 25 is a nice achievement)
5 miles 22:05+ # Phillimon Hanneck (ZIM) 20 Mar 1993 New Orleans
According to TFN, when Bekele set the current world record, he went through 8k in 21:04.63.
Larry Smtthee 21:03 (1998) is the world best time.
It's not a world record because the 5 mile is no official distance.

He ran faster than Bekele?!

Of course not. Did that even register as slightly believable to you? Surely you could Google Larry Smtthee and see that there is no world-class runner by the name. Maybe this is why you're not in the social elite class with the rest of LetsRun.

Mostly I wanted to hear from this poster exactly who the F Larry Smtthee is.
Anyways, you're right. I need to work on joining dat social elite class.
Larry Smithee absolutely ran that fast on an accurate course. The catch is that the course practically falls down hill - starts at the upper Alta parking lot in Little Cottonwood Canyon and goes five miles downhill.Great post race party at that event.

Well this thread seems a bit dated, regardless is there a list of top 8k times? I remember a few years back hearing Deriba Merga (by the way whats happened to him?) Opened up a half marathon with a suicide 21:4x?? 8k

Would love to see an 8K/5 mile all-time top list.
What is the threshold that separates a "hobbyjogger" from a "sub-elite" runner?
