Heard from a trustworthy source that Cantwell called Hoffa a "f****** hypocrite" at the post race press conference Actually a little controversy like this might be the best thing to happen in the sport. The shot put is already super exciting in the US (I was upset that they didn't show Nelson's final throw on the USATF broadcast, but ESPN seems good at removing any sort of drama from the field event broadcast) |

Cantwell is an idiot. A pro athlete needs to have all his own equipment, especially if breaking the world record is merely a throw away... no sympathy for him what so ever... |

Wow, Cantwell is really, really stupid. Why did he ask his competitors to carry his own stuff? And now he whines about it? Wow, just wow. A moronic prima donna. |

Cantwell is an idiot for sure. I mean WTF is he thinking? Hoffa is exactly right on point here. |

Have to agree!! What other sport expects competitors to bring their equipment for the opponent? Sounds like he was searching for an excuse on why he didn't throw the world record. |

So did our favorite Australian in his press conference: http://www.bostonindoorgames.com/2008/multimedia/video_player.htm |

It sounds like Cantwell might have helped out Hoffa in a previous situation, and Hoffa was not willing to return the favor. |

I'm confused. Why does Christian Cantwell not have his own shot? Or, assuming he does, why would he not bring it? This makes no sense, and none of the coverage I've read answers this basic initial question... |

From the article, it sounds like Cantwell has the size shot he likes, it's just a material they don't allow indoors( I think they said steel). But at worlds, they don't have restrictions and you can bring what you want. |

Maybe he could drop the 80 bucks or so for an indoor shot of the size he likes. I found several online within 5 minutes of looking. How lazy is he? I never had much of an opinion of him before, but now he looks like a real jerk. He's mad at a guy for not bringing him the shot he likes. It's his job to do that. |

Plus, if I read the article correctly, Hoffa offered to LOAN Cantwell his own shot for his throws, but oh no, he wanted Hoffa to bring another shot, just for his exalted lone use. Dork. |

I think the rule is that you can use any competitor's shot during the competition, once it has been checked in and certified. So Hoffa's offer was not so much a loan as a statement of the fact that his shot was available to Nelson to use during the competition. Still no idea why a competitor of Nelson's caliber would either A) not own the particular size indoor shot put he likes or B) not bring it to a competition. |

You have to be a democrat to make that kind of conclusion. That's all you do is blame Hoffa because you read between the lines. Dumb s--t. Hoffa doesn't even use that size shot in competition. |
| to clarify |

I believe you meant CANTWELL, not Nelson, in the above post. Nelson did bring his own preferred shot to the competition. The feud is between Hoffa and Cantwell. |

Yeah, can you imagine Webb asking Lagat to bring him Nike Miler spikes to the Oly trials..... |

Either there is more to this story than meets the eye, or Cantwell really is if first-class a$$hole. And a lazy, cheap, irresponsible one at that. I would spend a grand and pack an extra 500 lbs of luggage to break a world record. |
