1 hour 5 minutes and 4 seconds. was his time
5k 15:00 4:50 pace
10k 30:33 4:55 pace
Finish 1:05:04 4:58 avg
that's not too bad for him considering how he has run the past few years.
damn good job scott, 1:03:04 is an impressive time.
Ok I know I am going to get it but really a 1:05 half? That is well, not amazing. I am talking purely in the National Caliber world Class level. I mean if he is in the midst of a 140 mile week at altitude that is good but this guy is according to some a clear choice for the Olys. team and his ticket is all but punched next month. To me on paper anyway this would put him around 4th on a good day. Both as I recall Ritz, Hall, Sell, Meb, Coulpepper, and Several of the tier two guys Lehmkule, Fasil, and Carney are all way faster or at this level?? KK is not going to get in on previous times and right now there are a few guys previously mentioned that are hunting for scalps.
KK used to run 24:30 for five miles before excellent performances at Chicago. A 1:05 half is much better than 24:30. I think there is a 30% chance he is injured/drops out; a 40% chance he gets dropped; but a 20% chance he runs away with a commanding vicotry and a 10% chance he runs wells and makes the team.
yet another person making the mistake of basing their KK prediction on a warm-up performance. i honestly don't know how to handicap KK's chances for any marathon because he rarely does particularly well in any other races. we never know what kind of shape he's really in. i wouldn't call the guy a shoo-in by any means - he's to that point in a marathoner's career where things fall apart - but who knows what he was trying to do in this race. i'm not exactly certain that running a flat-out 1:02 or something would necessarily be the best warm-up for the trials.
KK often ran subpar race performances in the months previouse to great marathons. He races these on full mileage He ran a hilly couse at 5' pace. 2:11 will make the US Olympic team boys. I would not count him out.
How is it that everyone seems to know that KK put forth the best performance he was capable of today? He could be in the middle of huge volume and only running to get a sense of the pace he thinks it will take to win the trials. Carlos Lopes used to pull this shit all the time, not showing his hand before big races like his Olympic Gold or his WR at Rotterdam.
well, he said he cant handle more than 90 miles a week and stay healthy, so that is going to be his training for the trials. while he did have some poor races leading to great marathons, he also had some fantastic ones like crushing the field at new haven, falmouth, and many of the other summer/fall road races. who knows what to make of this, but i say he is done.
KK will be the man to beat at the trials !!!!
If that was marathon race pace, nothing more or less, and he sticks to it, he makes the team.

I think this is the stuff of Urban Legend. Khannouchi does have a record of "showing" his fitness before his marathons.

Actually Lopes pulled shit which involved winning World Cross both of those years. Olympic Gold and Rotterdam. He also ran the second fastest 10k ever before LA. He may have generally been pretty quiet before big races but he certainly did more than tip his hand.
I can't speak to what KK's training week was like or comment on whether or not he was "training through" this. I also am NOT going to preach about the wisdom and/or honesty of people who put a race bib on to "do a workout". I'm sure they're are a few people who actually use races as planned, controlled training, and aren't just tossing that line around as an excuse for running a stinker.
HOWEVER, I don't think you can say with any authority or logic that this was a "marathon pace" workout for KK. If the plan was to run a controlled 1:05 half, why did he go out at 4:50 pace (15:00 at 5K) only to slowly bleed time before running a few 5:10s and finishing just out of the money on a flat course? It certainly looks to me like he struggled... This may or may not end up being telling. He may still win the trials, but I really don't believe that this was intended to be a "pace" workout.
ya so how about those chico boys scotty bauhs and charlie serrano..nice job

bingo. i don't think KKs 10K or half marathon times have ever remotely been in the same class as his marathon capabilities, even when fully fit. the guy is just made for marathoning.
i'm not saying he'll crush the trials, i just agree that, more more than maybe anyone else in the field, you can't get any indication of what his marathon will be like based on any of his tuneup performances.
KK'2 2:08'44 at Chicago '04 was good for 5th.
I agree with chuck. He's a total crapshoot.
Not sure how he handles 26.2 on a hilly course, but he seems in good enough shape to take a spot on the team IF he really wants one- 2:10.

I agree, but it could have been as simple as he wanted to "test out the pace" in the early going and it didn't feel quite right, so he decided not to kill himself. By the way, remember Weldon talking about his 13:59 5k that didn't feel great mere weeks before his 28:06 10k?
