The one situation that's completely out of your control is if you happen to scare a bear by coming around a corner and it's completely surprised, then anything could happen, if it just swipes you in the neck you'll probably die. That's why it's important to make noise on trails, sing and call out especially on winding trails where you know there might be bears. To try and outrun one is impossible, they're good swimmers too.
really, it is all out of your control and dependent on the bear
a swipe in the neck could kill you but bears kill intentionally with their jaw with a bite that suffocates, the bear's purpose is to disable its prey then eat it, not to kill it necessarily before eating
singing a la Julie Andrews in the SOund of Music is not a good idea as studies show that some female voices singing can sound enough like wounded prey or lost young prey calling for mother that it can attract cougars or other predators, stick with loud confident talking
they can swim but they are NOT good swimmers, polar bears are good swimmers due to larger feet and elongated bodies
It should also be pointed out that of the 10 or so times I've seen black bears while running they almost always run away from you; That's the good news. Of course cubs are a different story.
I kill bears with my "bear" hands and then carry their dead carcasses on my shoulders for the rest of my tempo run in my trainers.

Once again proving that the best protection against bears is to run with Jason Rexing (in trainers, of course).
no chance.
bears have superior speed, superiour acceleration, and have extremely high levels of endurance. I once read they can run at about 10-15mph for hours if they had to. so even if your zig-zagging go you far away, when you got tired, it'd track you down.

I was told that if chased by a bear that you should run perpendicular to the slope of the hill because a bear's legs cannot handle running in that direction.
Stay outside the grizzly's cage at the zoo and you won't have to worry about outrunning it.
studies show...interesting, how would they study that in the wild?
But if you're smart maybe you can still get the upper hand...
No, you can outrun a grizzly if you really have to do it. Those things are so fat and out of shape. Maybe y'all are slow as hell, I know I could do it.
Josh Cox and Dan Browne vs. Bear:
Only if you run with a slower, fatter person.
Two men are in Africa shooting nature photographs, and walk out to the middle of a field to capture some images of a family of Impala. At some distance from their subjects, the antelope turn and run, and the men hear some rustling behind them. A thin, drooling lion stands only ten meters away staring at them intently. There is nowhere to run, and the men have no guns. Slowly, one of the photographers squats down and tightens his laces. With wide eyes and a shaky voice, the other one asks, "You're not going to try to outrun that cat, are you?" His partner stands and replies simply, "I only have to outrun you."

from attack reports of what people were doing when attacked - they study the incident reports
I bet you could out run that grissly in a 5K. I'm thinking the bear could only do a 21 minute 5K.

I'm 95% sure this isn't true. Humans are just about the best distance runners on the planet. A fit human (like our ancestors) can cruise for hours, running down prey effectively, sometimes over the course of a few days.

Oh you think so do you, check this out.

no it's suprisingly true, bears have amazing endurance. Go try to look for it, I'd be all non-lazy and find you a link, but I really am that lazy. I think it's on the World Wild Life Federation page about grizzly bears.
Idk why a bear would need to have incredible endurance, they just stand around catching jumping fish and raiding honey pots, but apparently they have super endurance.
A human is certainly not as agile or better at accelerating than a bear--or virtually any other animal for that matter. If anything, the only edge a human has over the rest of the animal kingdom is the ability to run long distances (over 10km), particularly in the heat.
to the original poster - dude, this isn't tecmo bowl.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
