You can't can't really count 1500s, especially with those conversions, even if they do come from the iaaf tables.

Good point. No conversion is absolutely perfect, but your 1.08 factor seems right, and basically, yes, Webb would be right around 16 -22 depending on conversion factor used.

So around 20th all time seems about right. That's a lot more realistic than saying he is "# 8 all time", because the mile is not run that often of course.
why stop at 1500 then?

That's the most retarded statement I've ever heard on Letsrun (and that's saying something)...while you're at it, why not print out the all-time 800 meter list to show us that Web is only the 50th best miler of all time? Or better yet, I'll use my college 5,000 meter PR of 13:51 to show that I'm one of the top Texas HS milers of all time.

Ok, then show me when the following 12 guys ran a perfectly-paced, rabbited full mile race:

Bernard Lagat
Fermin Cacho
Mehdi Baala
Daniel K. Komen
Rashid Ramzi
William Chirchir
Ali Saidi-Sief
Sydney Maree
Sebastian Coe
Laban Rotich
Timothy Kiptanui
Rui Silva

Do you know anyone who thinks Alan Webb is actually better than these guys?

Even if they didn't actually run it, their 1500 times prove that they could.

Webb could run a 1500 world record next year in to win the Olympic final, and you idiots would still find some dumb reason to tear him down.

It is freaking simple. He is the 8th fastest person over the mile distance. Ever.

You know, when you are saying that someone made the "most retarded statement I've ever heard on Letsrun", and then you go ahead and make a much mooooore retarded statement than they did, then ya kinda make yourself look awful silly there bucko.

Seriously, the 1500m and the mile are VERY similar races, only about 100m difference. Comparing times in those events makes perfect sense. But then you make an ass of yourself saying that comparing the 1500 and mile is like comparing the 800 and mile or you college 5k pr and texas HS mile times.....what !??! Yeah, you're an ass.

Webb is #8 fastest miler of all time, but is around 20th fastest 1500/miler ever. Not that hard to understand, is it?
sigh...

The 1500 and mile are two distances which are frequently considered "equivalent" for purposes of measuring one's ability at the other. The best 1500 meter runners in the world are also generally the best mile runners in the world and vice versa. So when attempting to determine the level of a 1500 or mile performance the distance is quite often converted to the other for sake of comparison.

This link (and practice) is so well known, so commonly understood that only a complete ignoramus would make a post like yours.
it was actually reasonable

1500m is extremely well correlated with mile time, while 800m and 5000m time are less well correlated. "xfghfgsh" was comparing nectarines to peaches, while "why stop at 1500?" is trying to compare apples to oranges. While all conversions are still conversions, there are good conversions and bad ones.

Well, Webb smoked Baala head-to-head over the last 200m at Gaz de France en route to his world leading 1500 time...
