thanks for the link. i think most of us have met someone with amazing natural talent who hardly needs to practice or who's ambivalent about using the talent.
his reminds me of a young woman (post-collegiate) that I coached who ran 2:09 for 800 on training of one workout and one distance run of 3-6 miles a week. A nice girl who liked competing (and had great racing instincts), but couldn't see the point of trying for the Oly Trials or anything beyond that.
A kid from my high school ran 4:17 and 1:57 as a freshman, never ran in between seasons, and enjoyed being the 6th player on the basketball team more than running.
The guy ran 24-25 200's in repeats. He definitely had potential to be a stud miler some day. It just didn't interest him or drive him to put anything more than the minimum which was good enough to win a state title and get a college scholarship. I think he quit running after a couple years in college.
Some people get the running bug and some don't. Kim Gallagher I remember was quoted as saying that she never really liked running but somehow ended up with Olympic medals.
Yes I have met a few like this on the track in my days. I have always communicated to them the most famous statement we hear today. SCREWWWW YOU GUYS I'm GOINNN HOOammmmmme!
Yeah, they're out there. That ambivalence and the overall lack of interest in running in the US is what keeps us from having a real solid troop of world class guys. Went to HS with a guy who ran 48 and 1:55 and spent most of his time as the left fielder on the baseball team. Trained a couple of days a week, running 4 x 400 one day, 8 x 200 the next. That's it. Two days a week, no mileage. Drove a lot of people who worked hard crazy. He looked like a double for Andre Bucher. Didn't get anywhere with baseball and didn't care.
Frustrate? No.
Call into question the validity of my maniacal attempt to become barely better than other guys in their late 30s who only train less half as much as I do? Sure.
Make me alternate between wanting to call my therapist and shoot myself in the head? Probably.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
