He's going after the head position and will interview. How can the AD say no? OSU Track is coming back.

How about for the women?
The REAL finalists
==================
Darryl Anderson TCU
Mike Holloway Florida
Harvey Glance Alabama
Curtis Frye South Carolina
So what does AD Gene Smith want?
Clearly the AD wants someone who is probably not a great coach but more of a name.
Butch Reynelds just had his position as a Speed Coach in the football program "re-done". I would doubt he would do that last month and then this month be looking to be the Head T&F Coach. It is only a guess, but I think there is better communication at OSU than for that to happen. Besides, he probably makes more money as a speed coach on the football staff, than he would as the Head T&F Coach.

Can anyone else confirm that list?
Darryl Anderson TCU
Mike Holloway Florida
Harvey Glance Alabama
Curtis Frye South Carolina
I don't see Robert Gary beating any of those guys for the job. Any one of those guys would absolutely light the Big 10 on fire...
Kids on the track team have been told that Gary is a finalist for the men's job and they're only interviewing 3. No doubt those other guys are a way bigger name, but Gary won't ask for a ton of money like these other guys. Harvey Glance is very best friends with Russ Rodgers who just got canned. Do those others want the job or just the offer to take back to their respective schools?
Football rules OSU and Gene Smith isn't going to mess around with Tresel over Butch. Can Gary and Buch work together?
And clearly race has nothing to do with it right??
None of those guys will leave their current situations. I can't see Butch wanting this thing; sounds like he has a great set-up with football and I would guess it would be a hefty pay-cut to go be the track coach. If the names are true, Gary may very well end up with it.Karen Dennis is going to walk into the same situation with the head women's opening.

I would agree. Way back when, I had made an intial prediction of Connie Price-Smith and Darryl Anderson.
I think if the guys on the list truly want the job, any one of them could get it. However, I think what they really want is to show their own school, "I am a viable candidate elsewhere, please pay me more money."
I think it will come down to Robert Gary and Darryl Anderson for the Men's job. Here is the question - Will Robert Gary stay on if they hire Darryl Anderson? If he says yes, then why wouldn't you hire Darryl Anderson? That is a better staff than Robert Gary as Head Coach and someone lesser than Darryl as the Asst. Coach working with the sprinters. That will be a tricky situation for RG...
The women's side I just can't see how they hire Karen Dennis, which is why I have to think they will hire Karen Dennis. It makes such little sense - maybe Isaiah Thomas is in charge of it...
Side Note - TCU is in trouble if Darryl leaves. They will definitely be in for a fall if they have to hire a new staff, again...
While Tressel and the coordinators and position coaches all make great bank, I highly doubt that Butch as a strength and conditioning coach makes more than the head track coach.
Butch isn't qualified to be the head track coach at Ohio State and did a marginal job as an assistant a few years back in the best funded area of the team.
Butch barely coached at Ohio State; he was there less than Russ if that is actually possible. He is only interested in the head track job because he can't be as lazy as he wants to be working for Coach Tressel. I actually don't think Gary should stay if he doesn't get the head job; how can he stay on? However, the administration loves Gary and I could see them asking Rob who he'd like to work with/for.
Ohio State government site has Butch making $89,925 per year over at football. Russ was/is making $66,872 per year.
1.) That is shocking for a combined program at THE Ohio State University!
2.) That is some easy math that even Butch can understand!

I bet he (Butch) got a raise with his new title in June and that has a much better bonus structure too.
They are not going to get anyone except RG and KD for that money (even if they pay each of them that). Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina all have assistatnt coaches who make nearly that amount, let alone what the Head Coaches make. I bet Darryl makes more than that at TCU (in charge of both programs).
I would guess most schools at OSU's level are paying around $75,000 - 80,000 (Head Coach) / $50,000 - $55,000 (Asst. Coaches) in a separate program and $90,000 - $100,000 (Head Coach) / $40,000 - $60,000 (Asst. Coaches) in a combined program. This is not everyone, but most of the "top 15-20 programs", which OSU definitely is one of the top 15 programs in the country (not teams, programs).
Are they going to ante up and pay for a "big name coach"? If not you can absolutely be certain this job will be Robert Gary, Karen Dennis, and most of the current staff.
What do assistants make at OSU. They have had some good ones, so why do they stay if the pay is far below the norm.
I must admit to being very shocked, but not entirely surprised to see this. The Big 10 appears to be a very low paying conference for track and field.
66872 is chump change for a head coach of a combined program and I would be confident that if they don't want to pay over 100,000 then their choices would indeed be limited.
I can personally name at least a dozen coaches who would do a much better job than the finalists who were named in this thread. I can say with confidence that most of the coaches of other universities in Ohio hope that one of those candidates gets the job. Really good coaches would make every else's jobs more difficult, but the ones mentioned would not.
Too bad for OSU

The Big 10 pays far behind the SEC, Big 12, PAC 10, and ACC which is one of the reasons they are not as competitive with those conferences in T&F as they used to be. Most of their assistants are not paid on par either.
I would definitely disagree about Curtis Frye, Darryl Anderson, and Mike Holloway coming to OSU and not making things difficult for the other coaches in the Big 10. And you can call it arrogance or ignorance, but regardless, there is no school in Ohio that OSU gives a sh*t about, not one of them. They only care about the Big 10.
In fact I would say most AD's and schools in the Big 10 care mostly about Big 10's. It is where you finished in the conference meet thay ask about first. Again you can call it arrogance or ignorance, but it is true.
I have already said this, I think a lot of where the Big 10 will go in T&F will be tied to this hire. It will benefit every school in the Big 10 for OSU to "up the ante" for operating their program. Will they do it? We will soon find out...
I personally have heard that Dennis is about the same as Russ Rodgers. She has also been a head coach before and may not agree to that amount to be a head coach. However, if she is working for under Russ, she may not have a ton of other options.
I have never understood why Gary has stayed at Ohio State (just from some of the horror stories I have heard he's had to put up with from Rodgers)? That being said, perhaps he wants to coach at his alma mater and sees potential. With his success in less than ideal circumstances, his obvious commitemnt to the University, and his young age (willing to take the job for less), I think he'd make just as good a hire as any of these MAC coaches I'm hearing about.
I have to believe that all the assistants are done at Ohio State unless the new head coach hirees agree to take them on. Gary may be safe if he can get under the cross country umbrella, but probably only for a year; new coaches don't want old coaches on their staff after that 1st year.
This is going to take forever; have they even begun interviews yet?
why the heck would Frye OR Holloway love their cushy jobs and schools they raised to prominence?
ain't THAT much more money? is it?
There is a lot more job security in the Big 10 than in the SEC. How do you think underachieving and basically hated throughout the state Russ had a job for almost 20 years. Plus, the sprints in the SEC are basically the NCAA finals whereas the Big 10 has 1 or 2 guys and then average. These guys would dominate the conference within 2 years.
A 2-time Olympian at his alma mater who was just the Regional coach of the year does not lose his job. This is Ohio State and it's not football or basketball. RG may not land the head gig (why on earth would you want that mess), but he sure as heck won't be asked to leave!
