American sprint star Fred Kerley was arrested and booked at Broward County Jail on Thursday after an altercation at the meet hotel two days before he was set to race at Grand Slam Track’s inaugural US event in Miami. Kerley was charged with touch or strike battery; there was no immediate timeline for his release.

In a statement to LetsRun.com, Grand Slam Track said that Kerley, who is signed as a Racer in the series’ short sprints group (100/200 meters) will not compete this weekend. Grand Slam Track did not say whether Kerley would be allowed to race at the series’ remaining meets in Philadelphia (May 30 – June 1) or Los Angeles (June 27-29).

Kerley, 29, is one of the most decorated sprinters of his generation, winning the 100-meter world title in 2022 and Olympic medals in the 100 in 2021 (silver) and 2024 (bronze).

Thursday marked the second time Kerley has been arrested in 2025. In January, Kerley was arrested in Miami Beach following a confrontation with police. In February, he pled not guilty to charges of battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

Kerley has also been charged with battery by strangulation and robbery by sudden snatching stemming from a third, separate incident involving his wife, Angelica, in May 2024. Kerley also pled not guilty in that case.

Kerley endured a turbulent year on the track in 2024, parting ways with sponsor Asics shortly before the Olympic Trials in June, only to make the US Olympic team in the 100 meters and finish 3rd in the Olympic final in Paris. Kerley has been competing without a shoe sponsor in 2025, finishing 4th in the short sprints event group at the first Grand Slam Track event in Kingston in April.

Kerley’s agent Ricky Simms did not immediately respond to a message from LetsRun.com.
