It’s On: Sifan Hassan Will Go For The Triple Again At 2023 Worlds

How refreshing.

In stark contrast to how two of America’s top female track stars seemingly have to be begged to compete in a single event at the World Championships, the Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan announced today that she will once again go for the 1,500, 5,000, and 10,000 triple at a global championship. And she’s doing so less than four months after winning the London Marathon in shock fashion.

Article continues below player.

Hassan first attempted the triple at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which took place in 2021 and she was quite successful as she picked up three medals. She won gold in the 5000, nabbed the bronze in the 1500 after falling in her heat but still winning the heat, and won the 10,000.

The schedule in 2023 is different compared to 2021 but it’s similar in terms of difficulty, albeit a little bit more difficult. Hassan will once again have to run a 1500 prelim on the same day as the final of a longer distance event, this time the 10,000 (in 2021 it was the 5000). But in 2023, there is only a 7-hour-and-40-minute gap between the two races whereas in 2021 the gap was 12 hours and 5 minutes. Here is how the two schedules compare.

2021 Tokyo Schedule for Hassan
July 30: 5000 prelims, 7 p.m.
August 2: 1500 prelims, 9:35 a.m.; 5k final, 9:40 p.m.
August 4: 1500 semis, 7 p.m.
August 6: 1500 final, 9:50 p.m.
August 7: 10,000 final, 7:45 p.m.
2023 Budapest Schedule for Hassan
August 19: 1500 prelims 1:15 p.m.; 10k final 19 8:55 p.m.
August 20: 1500 semis, 5:05 p.m.
August 22:1500 final, 9:31 p.m.
August 23: 5000 heats, 11:10 a.m.
August 26: 5000 final, 8:50 p.m.

The competition Hassan will face is stiff as she’ll face the world record holder in each event. DraftKings lists Hassan as the second choice in the women’s 1500 (+650/ 13.3% implied win rate), and the third choice in the 5,000 (+800, 11.1% win rate) and 10,000 (+350, 22% implied win rate).
