Simeon Birnbaum Wins Nike Outdoor Nationals High School “Dream” Mile

Simeon Birnbaum used a tremendous kick the final 100m to pass Leo Young and win the Nike Outdoor Nationals (NON) Boys “Dream” Mile at Hayward Field in 4:02.22, capping an incredible week for the Rapid City, South Dakota senior.

On Wednesday, Birnbaum blasted a 55.9 final lap to win the Brooks PR 2-mile in 8:34.10, the fastest time ever by an American* high schooler. On Friday he ran the NON pro 1500m and PRd to finish third in 3:37.94, the #2 1500m time ever by an American high schooler.

On Sunday with rainy conditions in Oregon, facing the deepest high school mile field ever, it was just about getting the win and that is exactly what Birnbaum did. A 2:03.95 half-way split meant a fast time as out of the window. At the bell (3:05.54 for 1320y), sub 4 miler Rocky Hanson led, stalked by Leo Young. Birnbaum was only 6th. Young took the lead on the backstretch and led around the final bend as Birnbaum went wide and got on Young’s shoulder heading onto the final straight.

Coming off the final turn Young appeared to open a little daylight on Birnbaum, but before the halfway mark of the final stretch Birnbaum found another gear and would close the gap on Young, pass him and before the finish turn at Young and give him a shush with his index finger.

There was no doubt about it, Simeon Birnbaum is the top US high school miler in 2023.
