Everyone Chill: Cooper Teare Was In The Hospital Yesterday, But Is Fine for Worlds

On Sunday afternoon, photographer Joe Hale posted a photo of US 1500 champion Cooper Teare to his Instagram Story with the caption “ER vlog gonna go stupid.” The shot displayed a masked Teare sitting in a hospital chair with a pulse oximeter on his left forefinger, suggesting Teare had just visited the emergency room. Off to the side, with a camera pointed toward Teare, was his friend and roommate Ben Crawford.

The photo set off a wave of speculation. By Monday morning, a thread titled “Cooper Teare hospitalized???” was super hot and trending on the LetsRun.com homepage (there are few things running fans enjoy more than wildly speculating about a situation based on one piece of information). The phone of Teare’s agent, Isaya Okwiya, soon started to blow up, not just with media types but with calls from Teare’s family members wanting to know what was going on with the US 1500-meter champion. With the first round of his first World Championships less than a week away, was Teare in danger of missing the meet?

Unsolicited, Okwiya reached out to LetsRun.com to assuage those fears: rest assured that when the first round of the men’s 1500 begins on Saturday at Hayward Field, hometown favorite Teare will be on the start line.

“He is very healthy,” Okwiya said on Monday afternoon. “…He is working out probably right now as we speak. And yesterday I talked to him while he was on the way to get his World Championships credential.”

The truth, revealed in a video posted by New Generation Track and Field on Monday: Teare cut his left ring finger while slicing an avocado for lunch. He received stitches at a local hospital but was otherwise fine.
