Jerry Schumacher, new Head Coach of Oregon XC/Track and Field

I was thinking the same thing while listening to the end of the podcast. Very curious to see what the impact will be for Oregon, BTC, and hocker/teare if what they said is indeed true.

This was discussed on the Letsrun Podcast. It seems pretty unlikely. They already have a phenomenal distance coach in Ben Thomas. It wouldn’t make sense to have both Jerry and Ben coaching. Also, why would Jerry coach a college team. He has the perfect situation with BTC. He only works 2-3 days a week at the moment, only showing-up at practice for workouts. Why would Jerry take such a Cush job that is coaching professional to coach college kids at Oregon?

Or college administrators. I can't imagine him asking for that headeache.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nike formally dismantles BTC like NOP for PR reasons and starts something "new" with a different head coach.

What a poor message that would be to university students,hiring a man who continued to coach a convicted drugs cheat after she’d got busted..

Oregon would just become a pipeline to BTC. With NIL money now, Nike can just get the best recruits out of HS and then funnel them to BTC.

The rumours I've heard - that it's pretty much a done deal that OTC coach Mark Rowland has taken another job.

The more speculative rumour was that with Rowland departing, and with all the drama around BTC, Nike want to combine OTC and BTC/rebrand, having one team in Portland (UAC) and one in Eugene (O/BTC). Rather than two in Portland. The idea being Schumacher remains coach of the combined team.

Again, trust the former info, but the second rumour I question more. Might even just be an idea that escaped a brainstorming meeting at Nike and spiraled into a bigger rumour.

This makes the most sense. OTC really hasn’t had much going for it since the early 2010s. Sure they got Amos…Post prime and got Mead/Blankenship to the Olympics but the whole group feels like an afterthought right now. Or, Thompson just gets OTC, keeps the middle distance guys from OTC, adds Hocker, Teare, West, and the OTC distance crew (any besides Mead / Kipyego)? go to BTC. Maybe Jerry takes the mid-d women as well. Idk I’m drunk.

Are they also going to relocate the entire Nike campus to Eugene? The campus and all its amenities is a big part of their pro training groups.

No way. If anything Jerry want to make it in L.A. where we all want to be someday.

I mean, not really. They spend about 2 months in Flagstaff and 2-3months in Park City. With a 6 week break, plus time on the road for races, they're spending less than half the year actually in Portland.

Even when they are "home," the last few years BTC have been using a private gym off campus for weight work. They have their own physio who treats them off the nike campus. This past fall from their social media and from podcast comments, they split their workouts between Duniway Park, Delta Park, and Sauvie Island. They basically didn't use Nike campus for workouts all fall.

Forget about medals. There was no woman on the team or in the United States close to Houlihan at 1500 to 5000m.
