US Olympian Cole Hocker and his training partner, Cooper Teare, revealed after they were upset in the men’s 3,000m at the Millrose Games by Geordie Beamish, that they will be targeting the American record in the mile in two weeks in Chicago.

“I don’t know what Cooper told you, but we’re trying to take a jab, a real legitimate attempt at that American record indoors (3:49.89 by Bernard Lagat). Based off where we were last year at this point, we’re ahead of that and last year we were able to run 3:50,” said Hocker in the video below.

“You need all the right pacing, all the right elements, but I think we’re in the right position to do that,” he added.

Teare, too, was bullish that he and Hocker are fitter than they were last year.

When asked to compare his fitness this year to last, he said. “[We’re] miles above from where we were last year. We have a lot of like base stuff that is a pretty good indicator of where we’re at. I think we’re head and shoulders above where we were last year.” He noted that they did their first track workout of the year this Tuesday.

The record attempt will be at the Windy City Invitational at the new Gately Indoor Track and Field complex which has a hydraulically banked track.
