Konstanze Klosterhalfen’s 31:01.71 German 10,000 National Record, Ajee Wilson’s 1:58.93 Win Highlight Texas Qualifier

Konstanze Klosterhalfen’s 31:01.71 German record in her 10,000-meter debut was the highlight of the Texas Qualifier, a distance-focused meet held in Austin this weekend. Klosterhalfen, the 2019 World Championships bronze medalist at 5,000 meters, ran most of the race alone, lapping the entire field, including runner-up Keira D’Amato, who clocked a pb of 32:16.82.

The event ended up being a bit of a misnomer as few qualifying times were earned as warm, humid conditions (73 degrees (22.9C), 65 dew point, 76% humidity) made fast times difficult in the long distance events. Kind of crazy as just 11 days ago it was 7 degrees (-13.9 C) in Austin. Tonight, only three athletes hit the Olympic standard — Klosterhalfen, Ajee’ Wilson in the women’s 800 (1:58.93) and Elle Purrier in the 5,000 (15:08.61). Klosterhalfen’s name was the only addition to the Olympic qualifier list, as Wilson and Purrier already had the standard in their events.

Other winners on the night included Gabriela DeBues-Stafford in the women’s 1500 (4:10.09 over Bowerman TC teammate Sinclaire Johnson’s 4:10.75), Isaiah Harris in the men’s 800 (1:46.19), and Justyn Knight in the men’s 1500 (3:36.62). Knight’s win was the most surprising as the 2017 and 2019 world championship finalist at 5000 dropped down and beat the milers in their event.
