2013 Arcadia Invitational – 18 Boys Go Sub-9

Last year, we were amazed when 16 boys broke 9:00 flat for 3,200 at the Arcadia Invitational:

Well Aracadia lived up to they hype once again this year as 18-boys, including two not in the top heat, broke 9:00 for 3,200.

The winner was Ben Saarel of Utah who used a 55 second last lap and 4:14 last 1,600 to win in 8:45.74, a nearly 10-second improvement over his 8:55.30 pb. Saarel, who will run for Mark Wetmore at Colorado at Colorado last year, was fourth at Foot Lockers last fall in cross country.

The fast-times were of course non unexpected. Arcadia is sort of the “Stanford” of HS running in that tons of people fly out there to run in pristine conditions. Messageboard poster “Another Option” did some great research and determined that at least 10 guys had already gone sub-9 coming into the race:

In the girls 3,200, two time NXN champ Sarah Baxter (who beat Mary Cain at NXN this year), won the 3,200 in 10:08.76 and split a 4:52 in the 4 x 1600.
