I wear a mask and nothing else.
I live in Cedar City, UT right now and will be moving back to Montana. I haven't been running with a mask and haven't noticed other runners or walkers wearing one very frequently. I suspect I'll have to wear a Buff around my neck back in Montana, since so many more people will be out on trails and public paths. I plan to change up my routes and run earlier to avoid large crowds.
Somerville MA just announced starting April 29th they will require face masks, even for runners.
“Wearing a mask is far more effective if everyone is doing it,” said City Council President Matt McLaughlin. “The effectiveness of face masks decreases significantly if someone infected with COVID-19 isn’t wearing a mask, even if others do wear masks. We need a collective buy-in from the public to stop the spread of infection.
The City and the Somerville Police are aware that it may be a challenge for everyone to comply at all times, such as parents trying to keep masks on small children. The Police are committed to compassionate policing, and will seek first to educate members of the public about the face covering requirement wherever possible. As available, Officers will also carry masks to give to our most vulnerable residents such as persons experiencing homelessness or persons living with mental illness. However, after the one-week grace period, persons showing willful disregard, may be subject to a written warning or a $300 fine. Exceptions will be made for persons unable to medically tolerate a face covering."
Denver - no mask. Keeping my distance from walkers and other runners. Run early in the morning and later in the afternoon, when most people are not out .
Live in a southern suburb of Chicago. It’s pretty sleepy here. I’ve given up running trails and in parks. I run on streets near my house, making sure to give others as much space as possible. I’ve even stopped and waited on occasion when it was clear I couldn’t pass someone safely. I wore a mask for just the second time on a run today. My wife got each member of our family a fashion mask, but it was pretty uncomfortable. I’ll be going back to my balaclava for my next run.
No way.
Why would I wear a face mask running outside?
People who do are ridiculous.
Boston area runner. Running outside with no mask.
This is true. A bandana won't stop your breath at all. But more socially acceptable.
I don't and won't (smaller city). I've been staying off a couple trails that I normally run on a lot because they are really busy. I just run on the roads and veer into the road or cross the street when i see people. I did pull my shirt over my face once because I couldn't get more than about 4 ft from someone and didn't want them to start screaming at me (they looked like a crazy mask fanatic). The chance that I have covid and will pass it along by passing someone walking from 6-15 ft away is 0.001% or less I am sure and so is me getting it from them. I'm willing to take those odds.
Outskirts of Houston. We haven’t had to wear masks while running as long as we maintain 6 ft apart. The trails I run on are wide enough so it’s easy to keep apart. So I haven’t been wearing a mask while running.
As of today we’re required to wear a mask outside (but still ok to exercise, run without one). But today our Governor just threw most requirements out the window starting Friday.... so we’ll be the next set of canaries in the coal mine.
I run in LA and the burbs with no mask. Most of the time it’s been in the late evening so I don’t encounter too many people. But when I do run in the morning or late afternoon nothing has been said to me. I would say less than 10 percent of runners I pass by are wearing masks. Masks are only “required” inside stores.
Central coast CA. No mask at all.
I run/ride in places very few people go and keep a respectful distance, even if it means stopping and moving off the narrow trail ~6ft or so. No one seems to be wearing a mask when exercising. A few bike commuters around wear them.
What I dont get is when people wear them while walking in an uncrowded neighborhood by themselves. I really cant see how they are putting anyone at risk, including themselves.

Thank you.
Two weeks ago, 2 guys in a car honked and yelled at me while I was running. It really took me by surprise since I was running in the middle of nowhere. It was getting dark and there was noone on the road. I didn't have a mask, but I'm not even sure that's what bothered them. I think they just hated the fact that I was outside running. Btw they were 2 of them in the car, and none of them was wearing a mask.
Things have changed though since now the governor has asked people to wear masks in public. So now I take a scarf with me whenever I go for a run.
In general the public is not trained to used face covering or masks in an effective and safe manor. Many here posted that pull the mask up when they come near others. Pulling a mask up and down may make it more likely one will infect themselves. There are other guidelines for wearing them too.
From the below:
Avoid touching your face
It’s only natural to want to touch your face more when you’re wearing a mask or face cover because it feels foreign or funny to you.
How to keep masks and face covers clean
If you’re wondering how often your mask or face covers need to be washed, the answer is simple. They should be laundered after every use.
“If you can’t wash them right away, store them in a plastic bag or laundry basket,” Dr. Hamilton says. “Hand wash or wash on a gentle cycle using hot, soapy water. Then, dry them on high heat.” If you notice damage, or if the mask is heavily soiled, it’s best to throw it away.
3 mistakes people make with masks. From prior posting I assume many or most commit at least one of these mistakes.
Mistake #1: Not washing your hands before putting on your mask and after taking it off
Mistake #2: Not covering both your nose and mouth with the mask
Mistake #3: Constantly touching your mask to readjust it or touching the front when you're taking it off

Medium sized city in the southeast. I never wear a mask (running or not). I haven't seen any actual runners wearing masks but it's easy to pass on the streets with a wide berth. The silver lining to this whole pandemic are runs the hour before curfew. It feels like you have the city to yourself.

I live in the epicenter of this thing (NYC), and have NOT been wearing any face covering while out running. I keep my distance from people walking, and will even run in the street if someone is approaching on the sidewalk to give them space.
Am I being selfish, entitled, and putting others at risk? I’ve had a few people give me dirty looks or make snide remarks under their breathe, despite the fact I’m over 6ft away, and usually not breathing hard at all.
I see a lot of other runners and joggers in my neighborhood not wearing masks, and I’m also seeing a lot of hate/anger towards people solo exercising outside.
Interesting to see this thread started by someone on NBR (I'm assuming) considering many of your LC members according to Strava are running consistently with people they don't live with and pacing each other for workouts, time trials and virtual races.
But NBR LC always had an attitude of "rules are for thee, not for me" anyways.
Hi - no I am NOT part of NBC. I just live near McCarren Park, so I do a lot of tiny runs there, or along Kent Ave & over the Williamsburg bridge. Lots of foot traffic in these areas, so it’s hard to avoid people when out. Deep down I know I’m not going to get anyone sick by running without a mask, but for a moment I considered wearing one while running just to avoid any potential confrontation — if someone makes a snide remark under their breathe as I run by, I’m the person who’ll stop and defend my actions — which usually just turns into an argument : ))
Anyone saying that you should be wearing a mask running in a crowded park or path is part of the problem. Masks are not a replacement for distancing. Find somewhere else to run or go to the park when it’s not busy.
