Mid 20s now and used to run around 70-80 miles a week up till 2 years ago. Used to be a mid-distance runnner with 4:25 mile, 8:55 3k. I'm 6 weeks into consistent running (had a few weeks before it where i just ran single digit mile weeks). I started with 20 miles a week (7:45-8 min pace seems to be my comfort zone now) and I've added 2.5 miles every week running 4 times a week (now 5 times). Don't really have any goals and haven't thought about racing but just want to get fitter.
The problem is, I drink about 3-4 drinks a day (some days beers, some day whiskey) and this is my other hobby. (I take a day off every week or two so not an alcoholic dont worry guys. I also only drink at night). I'd like to know how much this lags my slow and gradual training schedule.
I wasn't sure it would be much of a problem but it seems like my team mates back from college can run sub 7min pace all the time no problem even though they run single digits a week. Not sure if its because theyve been running from time to time, or if theyre pushing themselves too hard or bc they dont run a lot of mileage but I cant help to think that my drinking habits may have actually made a significant impact to how my running fitness decreased.
Dont really know the exact science on this but would love to get some real advice.
