gary reed 1st in a national record 1:44.33.

Dave knew how to win:
"...after one lap around the track, he was several meters behind the runner in next-to-last place. Regarding that poor start, Wottle stated, "Once the gun went off, I was feeling really queasy, unsure of my abilities, and the other runners went out very quickly. That’s why I dropped behind; it wasn’t intentional."
As the second lap around the track began, Wottle, from his last-place position, darted through the pack. Though it appeared that he turned on the afterburners to stage a superhuman comeback, he explained, "The way the race developed, the [other runners] went out so fast at the beginning that they slowed down at the end. I was able to maintain the same pace that I started with.
"It was all relative . . . Even though it looked like I was kicking on them, they were coming back to me."
I've actually heard Wottle state this before- while the others faded, he was simply maintaining. Some strategy... huh?

Being the first to post a stupid retort makes "thinking before posting" prohibitive on the letsrun.com web site...
Who did Dave beat?
1. Dave WOTTLE (USA) 1:45.9 (margin was .03)
2. Yevhen ARZHANOV (SOV) 1:45.9
3. Michael BOIT (KEN) 1:46.0
4. Franz-Josef KEMPER (GER) 1:46.5
5. Robert OUKO (KEN) 1:46.5
6. Andrew CARTER (GBR) 1:46.6
7. Andrej KUPCZYK (POL) 1:47.1
8. Dieter FROMM (GDR) 1:48.0
I remember Krum running a 4.31.something at one point. Yeesh.
Can anyone really kick in an 800m off of an honest pace? The last 200m will often be the slowest, so the winner will be the one who fades the least. Unless the first lap is 53 or 54 seconds, it comes down to who holds form the best in the last 200m.

He beat both Robinson and Krum today.
Yeah, this page has a good outline on 800 training. I like the part about needing to run the last 45 to 50% anaerobically. So true.
Maybe, if they were to wear a hat?
Those dudes would have need more than a lucky hat, Krum gave up. USA has just been NON COMPETITIVE in ALL the distance and Middle distance races. Webb ( I don't count Webb's move has going for it and showing guts I consider it dumb if he thought it would work ) and Link made the finals....WOOOOOOO!

THIS WAS AN INCREDIBLE RACE. SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT WOTTLE HAD WON SO I RAN HOME TO WATCH THE REPLAY.... AND AS WOTTLE CAME OFF THE LAST TURN I THOUGHT SOMEONE HAD GIVEN ME THE WRONG RESULT, THAT WOTTLE COULD NOT POSSIBLY MAKE UP SO MUCH GROUND, BUT HE DID!!! FABULOUS KICK!
There was an analysis of Wottle\'s run at the OG and it turned out that he ran almost perfectly even 200\'s. But remember that he set the WR at the Olympic Trials. I got to see him do it and then got his autograph in the parking lot after the meet. I think I said something like ... that was surprising and he said yes, it was to him too. Dave was an awesome champion.
I remember several good runners coming out of Bowling Green U at the time. Can anybody name their coach?

Arzhanov hadn't been beaten in something like 2-3 years maybe and Boit and Ouko were no slouches.

Mel Brodt. Some of DWottle's teammates: Sid Sink, Craig McDonald, Jim Ferstle (of national reknown for his expertise on drugs in the sport), Tracy Elliott, Rick Schnitker, Bruce Vermilyea.
Amazing track moment and Wottle was a class act. His retelling of the race was that he was just trying to move up to a respectable place not to embarass his family back home.
Great kick true, but he was also very lucky, boxed in and passing everyone on the inside and ARZHANOV taking a spill at the finish.
