A friend was coaching hs. He was a former national hs & collegiate runner himself. He had a kid blow up in a 4 X 1600 relay. The kid was a 4:35 who ran 5:22 including a :96 final lap. At Monday's practice, he had the kid warm-up and run a :96 400. Upon taking the 100 split, the coach was screaming "Your tearing it up! Slow down! Slow down! You are way ahead. Walk if you have to. Get on pace! Get on pace! Slow down!" He was dead serious and truly angry in trying to get the kid to understand how much he must've given up to run so slowly. It was one of those 'you have to be there' things to appreciate, but very funny. I'm sure it did little for the kid, but it definately made the coach feel much better to get it all out.
