The quick, obvious answer, at least in America, is that President Trump's tenure in the office has seeing a remarkable fraying of the social fabric. He has maintained power by setting Americans against each other. He has also tried to institute an alternate reality in which Reality is what the Supreme Ruler says it is, rather than what scientists (for example) and experienced administrators (i.e., the Deep State) and a broad consensus among the mainstream media (i.e., the failing New York Times, etc.) show it to be. Trump's many defenders, led by the inimitably lower-middlebrow megaphone Sean Hannity, back him up in all this.
