Tinman's calculator for a 8:40 2-mile shows 4:59 as "threshold" pace. "Tempo" goes as low as 5:06. If he is in 8:30 shape (likely) then 4:59 is the fast end of "tempo",

I would say 20 minutes for a 4 mile tempo is indicative of a 8:10 3k. I have no idea how much mileage this kid does, but if it something like 70 mpw and given his pr's, a 5:00/mile tempo should be a very relaxed effort.

High schoolers don’t have the endurance extension of 20+ers. So that’s likely around his half pace. Which for a 20 minute tempo at his level is spot on.
But why not run the tempo on a better surface and a course that doesn’t involve constant turning. We have this thing called gps watches now that make 4 miles tempo on a smooth path very enjoyable.
We do our tempos on track too. We switch directions half way through. My coach likes precise paces

Phil, Tinman hasn't invented anything.
He invented the Internet. And that's just for starters.
Coach said highest mileage he's ever done is 69

Nice

Safer than going
all the way
to 100+.
Thats called a normal steady run, my god.

Call the workout "4 miles at Tinman Tempo" and it's totally accurate.
Is this Tinmam the inventor of tempo runs?
Yes
All this arguing about what this four mile run was or wasn't, and yet you haven't even done the math on your own post.
I assume what you have put above is from Tinman himself. If we follow his guidelines, outlined above, assuming that Young is a 13:40 runner, you come up with this:
13:40 = 4:22.4 for 1600m,. 4:24.0 for the mile
Long 60-80 minutes = 4:24 / .87 = 5:03
Medium 40-60 minutes = 4:24 / .90 = 4:53
Short 20-40 minutes = 4:24 / .93 = 4:43
So, I agree with these Tinman prescribed paces for a 1340 5K runner (and realize he did not invent these paces), but this 19:59 16-lapper was not subscribing to them.
Realize also, that if you credit Young with being able to run 13:30 or 14 flat, the paces change very little.
So, this was specifically NOT a Tinman tempo. It was a short tempo at 1 hour race pace for this runner.
He is the best in the nation right now, and I know that his coach is very committed and has coached quite a few good runners in 4 years. But I don't see much point to this kind of tempo, when you are currently running 4:14 pace for 3000m.
The "add 1 minute to your 3K pace or 5K pace" rule doesn't work at all, you should be able to see that by applying it to yourself.
Why are you guys putting so much analysis into 4 mile run at 5:00 minute pace? That is not a difficult run for Young at all.
It's almost like you have never been around elite athletes before. That is a great honest tempo for a 7:50 -8:00 3k guy. It's about the effort and what he did this week or next week. Good thing you guys posting are not coaching Nico.
He would rank 26th in the NCAA in the 3000. 26th in the 5000 is 13:49 and I would assume that 22 year old guys would be stronger than a 17 year old which means he would not fare as well in a longer distance. I put him at 13:55.

It's 31:00 pace for 10K.

Apparently not every workout Newberry Park does is a killer. Today on a live-stream, Nico Young did a 4 mile tempo on the track in 19:59. Using Daniels and Tinman's calculator and Nico's 3k time, that's 4 miles at about marathon pace.
How fast were his intervals after his 4-mile warm-up?
Heehaw

You can do math. What's your point?
