In partnership with HOKA we've been profiling their runners who made the Trials, starting with their non pro runners including the HOKA Aggies.
3 of their male runners really came a long way to make the Trials in different ways:
Tyler Andrews- didn't break 18:30 for 5k in high school. I'm thinking this might be the slowest male qualifier in high school (assuming they ran XC in high school).
Rajpaul Pannu started running because he was nearing 200 lbs as a sophomore in high school and his dad had died of an early age of a heart attack and now is a 2:17 guy. (Granted he did run 9:32 for 3200 in high school which is pretty good).
Swarnjit Boyal - went from being a club runner and told he wouldn't be on the varsity twice to winning a conference XC title at the NCAA D1 level.
In terms of improbability of them making the Trials, I think I'd ran Rajpaul #1, Tyler #2, and then put Swarnjit in a different category. He's come the farthest of anyone I know to win a D1 conference title, but it sounds like he had some success when he initially started running. If I had to rank them after a year of running I've put Tyler #1.
But these are only the HOKA guys. What if we open it up to the Trials community at large. Who came the farthest just to make the Trials?
I'm pasting the profiles of Tyler, Rajpaul and Swarnjit below:
