He has little to no chance of making any Kenyan teams apart from the world indoors which nobody in Kenya knows, cares about or goes. I’d have stuck it out in the US if was him.

You're correct.
Cheserek clearly wants to become a US citizen, but our country is anti-immigration under the current leadership, especially if immigrants come from from non-white countries.
USA is literally the least “anti immigration” country in the world. Name one country that takes in more immigrants.

+1. If the previous poster thinks the U.S. is anti immigration, they need to study up on the policies of other countries, perhaps starting with our neighbors.

So he keeps the USA as a backup... I'm really sick of all these athletes switching allegiances like it's nothing.
He has been here since highschool (10th grade I believe)and likes the life that he can live here. What's wrong with that? In fact he wasn't even a runner when he was in kenya
Isn't this false? Didnt he run like 29:xx for 10k in Kenya as a 15 year old?
There's also the story that he ran like 30 miles to take the test that got him accepted to St Benedict's in the first place.
I love Ches and would love to see him race as an American but saying that he wasn't a runner in Kenya is not accurate.

Unfortunately, this is the problem with a nation of people that only get their news from CNN/Fox blurbs on social media. Americans are very poorly educated when it comes to world (and even domestic) politics.

The most recent study on immigration has the USA 68th on the list with 14.3% of its population as immigrants. This is well behind other similar countries (i.e. western, developed) such as Australia 33.3%, Switzerland, 23.9, New Zealand 25.1%, Canada 21.9%, Sweden 18.5%, Austria 17.4% and Ireland 15.9%.
We’re moving at the slowest rate of the decade under this administration. I’m sure it’s only gotten worse over the last year, but those stats aren’t available yet.

How racist that Trump is letting these illegals wait, so they can't immediately influence elections.
Good for Ches given his current circumstances, bad for the USA and the its xenophobic administration. For every one of these cases of making citizenship near impossible for someone who would clearly be an asset to the country, there are a thousand more cases of the US shutting out promising scientists, medical professionals and others who would greatly benefit a nation that likes to consider itself the greatest on earth. Not to mention good people living in war zones and terrible socioeconomic circumstances. But I digress. Good for Ches, it would be fun to see him in an Olympics!
From what I've read, he attended Oregon on a student visa, then got a P1 visa (often called artists and athletes visa for those with exceptional talent) but was unable to get a green card because of something bureaucratically idiotic like, he was not winning against international athletes, the competition in his races was not good enough. Without a green card you can't apply for US citizenship. And yes, under Trump last year, even legal immigration is way, way down.

Anybody know the facts about this?
Facts are, #45's policies all but guarantee that Africans, Hispanics, and Muslims are denied citizenship and even entry into the country
It really does seem weird.
Why lose his chance of running for the US (which he wants to do) for an indoor world championship?
He was ranked 4th “American” last year and ranked 4th “Kenyan” last year
So his chances of making the Olympic team are pretty equal for both countries. But he only has an outside shot in both countries.
Why not wait a few months to see how his citizenship progresses?
Unless:
- He is now certain that he will not get the citizenship in the next 2 years and he can’t see his career continuing longer than that
- His sponsors are requesting him to get on a National team, otherwise his sponsorship money will go down
- Gaining access to world championship (and winning a medal) will actually increase his chances of getting US citizenship (I believe that the US looks fondly on that to accept citizens). This last option simply means that he is trying to get citizenship (his initial goal) and he will use running to get that. Instead of the other way around. So as soon as he gets citizenship, he will simply retire or simply not run in Olympics or World championships anymore.
Racist Trump immigration policy has slowed immigration from non-white countries to a crawl, while Cheserek himself, who should have been a citizen long before this, was also misinformed and failed to file required paperwork early on when he should have. As for El Keniano's claim, Edward Cheserek has run 3:49 indoors and has a great kick for championship races. Kenya's 5000m and 10000m teams are makeable for him, especially the 5. He has more top speed than Rhonex Kipruto and should be able to compete in the kick with guys like Zakayo and whoever else shows up off the untested roads to the somewhat tested track races. He has not run sub 13 but I expect he will if he is healthy. This is a real shame but he had to do it because he'd been here over ten years, I think, and his career was passing him by.

This is exactly what We want. Law and order. Immigration laws are enforced. Immigration laws are created to slow immigration down to a crawl. We have enough people in our country. Internal population growth is all we need. It’s a big world out there. Live in your own country or try beautiful Scandinavia or England or Germany or Iraq or Afghanistan or Niger or Chad.

Exactly. That’s exactly what we do not want.
How do people think Cheserek will fare at altitude in the Kenyan trials? There have been very talented Kenyans living in Kenya their whole lives who run fantastically well in Europe closer to sea level, but don't do as well against other Kenyans in the trials at altitude and have difficulty making the team, or fail to.
Just wondering here... I seem to recall Cheserek running a 3:54 mile indoors at altitude the same indoor season not long before his 3:49.4 indoors. He was also born/raised at very high altitude according to his Wikipedia entry (perhaps 9,000 feet give or take a thousand feet, attempting to chase down a more exact answer on the interwebs).
Based on these factoids it seems like the Kenyan trials being held at altitude may be to his advantage, but don't really know. Eldoret where the 2016 trials were held is approx. 6,800 feet. Nairobi where the 2012 trials were held is 5,900 feet.

Breaking news? A Kenyan citizen will try to make a Kenyan team. How is this even a story? It would be news if Ed’s management team had been able to secure US citizenship for him, but accepting the status quo and attempting to make a Kenyan team seems like business as usual.
Yes taking the easy option because the US government hates giving citizenship out to anyone who’s not white
