The question asked shouldn't be, will Walmsley finish in the top 3? The better question is, does Walmsley have a chance at finishing in the top 20?

Also, another 18 miles today so I'd call his workout yesterday pretty solid compared to the people who actually raced it.
You also somehow failed to realize the guy that beat him by a minute ran with him today and put in 16.6 miles himself lol.
That extra 1.4 miles is why JW will have an advantage in the WHOLE marathon!!

Even if he finishes top 3, which I highly doubt, could he run under the olympic standard of 2:11:30? It’s a hilly hot humid course, I think times will be sluggish.

He doesn't need the Olympic standard. Top 3 auto qualifies. The race was granted gold label status. But he won't get top 3. Even if somehow one of the big 3 doesn't qualify(Rupp, Fauble, Ward) there are too many quality competitors with far better chances for that one spot.
Don’t forget about Korir

RnR events should be fined for that crap. Just a garbage operation when they can't get the MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL right.
I think everybody got his t-shirt, medal and a awesome result. That's all what matters.
The 10k event ran out of dri fit T Shirts. In fact, I believe none were even printed, except for the women's version. That's about 1500 shirts. Good stuff, RnR.
Oh you mean the guy who only runs road races and never tries anything else? Yeah that must have been challenging for him. The funny part is guys run their whole lives just to run a 1:03 and Jim can show up and do it in the middle of 150+ weeks. That's why we laugh. Because a local elite trail runner would smoke a national elite road runner on a trail race. Those skinny little road legs would be jello after that first 3k decent.

My thoughts exactly. His only saving grace is if some 2:10-2:11 guys swing for the fences and try to make the team and blow up or drop out.
Surely as an ultra fan you’ve heard of Cody Reed, instant success in trail running, 50K specialist, 7th at Western States in his first 100 ever? Well guess what, he was Brian Shrader’s teammate, and he was leagues slower than Brian. Cody ran 14:10 Brian ran 13:40. Brian could destroy the trails just as Cody and Jim do if he chose to. Just like Hayden Hawks and Matt Daniels do, because they come from real college running backgrounds. You really put on display trail runners lack of running knowledge man.
What “real running background” does Killian Journet come from? Would he get destroyed too? I literally haven’t seen one post from people saying Walmsley is going to make the Olympic squad. There are plenty of people that know he can run a 2:11 or 2:12 marathon if he shows up ready to run that day.
When did we jump to European Trail gods like Kilian? And when did we say “all successful trail runners come from real running backgrounds” The point was that if D1 fodder like Cody Reed can become elite trail runners, then hundreds of D1-3 and NAIA men and women could do the same if they chose to. We all know Jim has the talent to run a 2:12 marathon.
jesus, we just watched OP backpedal so hard and fast he could run a 63:xx half backwards

This is the consensus opinion among sane people. Then you have a tiny lunatic minority saying he can't run 2:15. And a tiny lunatic minority saying he can run 2:09.
btw Saying that any guy with a faster 5k than Jim could destroy him in ultras is almost as dumb as saying Wayde van Niekerk could destroy Rudisha in an 800m
I dont think some of these fast track and road guys would do well on trails. They arent for everyone. Sure they could learn quick, if they wanted, how to run well on trails. But would bet some of them dont convert well to trails. Flat, groomed, smooth trails no problem

... As I said several times, I like Jim, I just know what is going to happen at the trials and I’m glad it’ll silence some time ignorant people.
You do realize that you DON'T know what will happen, right? I mean, if you really try to go deep, really try to analyze what you are saying you'll surely realize that you cannot tell the future and that really probably no one can? Jim may win, Jim may lose, but the beauty of our sport is that we DON'T know what will happen, ever. Sometimes things happen in life that you might have expected, but often they don't. I'm excited to watch this young man as he is a wild card and I hope he makes the race even more exciting regardless of how he finishes.

Ironically, JW could make the 2020 Olympics, while both Van Niekirk & Rudisha might not!
I came back to this thread and the arguments are so inane.
Re: the course if the organizers say the cone is wrong and they ran 270-whatever short, that doesn't mean you are then factoring the other 12.9 miles' shortness/length. So if they say that it's a simple extrapolation, not add .1 for a correctly measured course. So this is clearly a 2:03 low mark.
Overall, it's a good sign for Walmsley he can run that fast at the Half in the midst of heavy training. We know the extra distance will if anything help him and he should be good dealing with hills as well. So with all these factors could he sneak into the top 10 with a 2:12 type marathon? That would be exciting.
Well yeah I once saw a hurdle race where 8 guys legitimately all fell at the end and the guy in last won, that’s about equivalent to the odds that Jim wins or places top 5.
