Do share. Humor is always welcome.
Ok so this is probably more cringe worthy than humorous. It starts on Thursday when a thrombosed hemorrhoid pops up. Basically a clot forms in a blood vessel and it becomes blocked, pressure builds, and it swells up. It is generally uncomfortable and then inconvenient when it is time for a BM. Not a big deal. I've had this in the past and it usually begins to improve after a week or so. Fast forward to Sunday. I'm thinking that after I take care of my morning BM I will go out for a run. In the process of taking care of business I notice that I am bleeding and I am not talking about a trace amount of blood on the TP. There is a quite a bit of blood on the TP and I am dripping into the toilet. I figured that the source of the bleeding is probably upstream from the clot and therefore probably not going to stop without some medical intervention. I make a pad out of TP and wedge it in my crack hope for the best while I fix myself breakfast and do a little research about my situation. Research indicates that letting the bleeding go for too long an lead to anemia so that is concerning. Needless to say that my daily run was scratched from the daily agenda. An hour goes by and I check to see if the bleeding has improved, but it has not. I let my wife know that I would be going to the ER and headed up the shower to clean up and wash all of the blood off my bottom. Unfortunately, I did not plan out the shower situation in advance. I fiinsh the shower but I am still bleeding and I don't want to get blood on the towel or bath mat. Fortunately, the TP is within reach so I was able to make another TP pad and wedge it in the crack. At some point my wife suggests that I could use a pad. I decline, not out of any sort of embarrassment at the thought of using a feminine hygiene product but because I had already thought about it and decided I would rather drop the flushable TP in the toilet rather than place a rather bloody pad in the trash for various reasons. I honestly don't know hoe my bleeding compares, but I suspect that it was more than you average menstrual flow. At least that was my thought at the time.
ER Visit
My wife offers to keep me company for the ER visit and I tell her that I hate to see her waste her time with me at the ER and let her now that it was not necessary. Bless her heart because she opted to keep me company during the ER visit. I'm guessing that early Sunday morning might be a slow time at the ER. Shortly after I finish registration I am taken back to a room and a nurse gets the vitals. It is not long before the doctor shows. He has me roll over on my side, removes the TP pad, and checks the situation. He tells me that he will need to drain it and remove the clots and then leaves the room. Now I am sitting there without anything to soak up the blood, but I figured that the doctor would be back soon. A nurse shows up with a vial of lidocaine so I figure the doctor was not too far behind. That was not the case and after a while of waiting I lift my a$$ off the table and find that yeah there is now a blood stain on the table. I then ask my wife to get me some paper towels from the dispenser on the wall. I put one paper towel between me and the blood spot on the table and the other I wedged in my crack. I guess the doctor was either filling in forms or taking care of another patient. After a while he shows up and is ready to take care of business. The doctor informs me that that the numbing shots are going to hurt when he inserts the needle and it will burn when he pushes in the injection and that I should not move in the process. He also tells me that he is going to tell me what he is going to do before he does it. So there I am face down on the table and and he proceeds to start the injections. I will have to give him credit for being a man of his word because wow did that hurt as he said. After he finishes some injections I thought he was done, but then he says, "Now I need to do the other side." What?!? After several painful injections I am trembling from the pain of the injections. Then it is time to take care of the problem and he tells me that I will feel some pressure. After the pain of the injection I am quite apprehensive about that is next in fear that the I was not numb enough. Again true to his word the doctor made two incisions and removed two clots and all I felt was pressure. The doctor did tell me that he would pack something or other which as best I understood is that he would insert gauze or something in the incisions. This translates into the fact that I need to have a followup visit very soon with a specialist or someone else that can take care of the packing and overall situation. Surprisingly the total time spent at the ER was something like 90min. I do have to mention that this ER is not attached to hospital and I think that most people go to the ER at the nearest hospital rather than this other ER. This probably helped in reducing the time I spent at the ER.
Specialist Visit
Not long after the they open on Monday morning I called the office of a Specialist to get me in for an appointment and they are able to squeeze me in with the regular appointments for the day. Not much to mention here other than that during the visit the doctor had to take care of the packing. He did mention that it was something that he would not do and that is probably why I was in as much pain as I was. So he examined things and proceeded to remove the packing. I will tell you that the pain that I experienced when he removed the packing was probably more intense but shorter in duration in total then the injections from the previous day. Ouch! I have a followup in a few weeks to find out what's next. The doctor was pretty quick with me on this visit probably because I was not a regularly scheduled appointment.
