The term 'stewardess' used to be commonplace in the airline industry, but over the past couple of decades it was phased out in favor of 'flight attendant'. Now, I understand that there are more male 'flight attendants' now than before, but why can't we simply refer to them as 'stewards' and, for the females, continue to refer to them as 'stewardesses'?
A steward, or stewardess for females, is just a person who caters and looks after passengers. It's not a particularly charged or loaded word.
