Anyone can spoof their data files right now. Where do you live? I can whip one up in a few minutes. What does it mean to you if someone can cheat and take you out of that top spot? Would you still want to keep running? Is it really only strava segments that get you out the door? Is that the right motivation for long-term running happiness?
All I can say is that it's been a great motivation for my long-term running happiness. It help me keep true to my fitness, keep my mileage up, keep my easy runs easy, etc just to know I could go out the door tomorrow morning or whenever I choose and take out a CR. I'm not enslaved to waiting weeks for some organised event, conditions on the day, feeling good on that particular day to get my sense of running achievement.
As to the cheating, yes I know people can do these things but it's generally pretty easy to spot flag them on the basis I mentioned before or sometimes you see a clear GPS discontinuity - a jump in one second between two points miles (not literally) away.
