It's January, he has plenty of time to find a new school. Perhaps he was getting recruited by other schools anyway. If he can't afford to go to school there because of the amount he's getting and he'd be better off going somewhere cheaper anyway. It's also not the AD, the coach gets to decide who is on and off the team including how much money they get. The athletic director just signs off on it. What you said is simply not true except in maybe the rare case where the athletic director is a huge micromanager which is rare when it comes to track.
