Irrelevant comment about the race, but it looked like Tuohy really struggled on the final hill and that's where Ewert and Thorvaldson made up ground . She also did last year, but that's when she admitted going out too fast.
Did it look like that to anyone else or was it the camera angle?
She WALKED up that last hill, I thought it was done at that point.
Even if someone beats Ewert by 6 minutes at FL and does a backflip across the finish line Tuohy is still the athlete of the year, sorry.
Agreed. She had the best overall season and every girl in the country has now lost this season other than her anyways.
But thanks for the clarification. Definitely thought it was over for her too at that rate. I’m sure seeing that gave Ewert and Thorvaldson some adrenaline. I wish Tuohy looked back less during the end.

Kinetic had 4 in before FM or Summit had 2. Did not see that happening.
Ratings not posted yet, but Kinetic went roughly 150+, 140+, 140+, 140+ 1-4. Huge race for them.

It was actually the momentum Ewart and Thorveldson from the hard left turn just prior to the hills where Thoeveldson passed Ewert. Those two were flying into the hills whereas Tuohy was slogging into the hills and almost crawling up them.
It was an instant moment where all three were elbow to elbow. Despite the others' momentum, Tuohy re-accelerated over the.last 200 meters. Best NXN race to date. Miserable conditions to be racing for the championships.
As it ahould be.
And watch out for junior Sydney Thorveldson next year.
....Niwot outperformed. Certainly justified their At-Large bid. Certainly impressed by their reigning 200-400-800 triple State Champion, Taylor James, Niwots 3rd runner today.

Newbury Park is one of these teams that won the team title without a single person transferring in after 9th grade. When was the last year this happened?
Well, their top girl was a senior year transfer and in an interview earlier this year, the coach talked about a transfer on the boy’s team from NV I think? I remember seeing on a few previous threads they have quite a few transfers from neighboring schools prior to high school (including Nico Young and his brothers). You can split hairs on what you define as transferring, but I think the point is most teams are all-star teams made up from kids originally outside the school.
Lincoln girls (2nd at large team from NW) got 18th.
Wonder how Cherry Creek would have done if they had been selected considering they destroyed the 12th and 14th place teams at Griak.

Yeah. She has that singsong voice going with a bit of a giggly tint. Sounds like an insecure teenager.

What a dumb post. He got second.
Credit to Ewert and Thorvaldson for running real well in tough conditions. before anyone says how much Tuohy died, she ran faster from the 2 mile mark tothe finish than everyone but Ewert and Thorvaldson. And then there was Katelynne Hart, perhaps under the weather or something, but 50th, 90 seconds behind Tuohy. Would not have thought that possible. Allie Janke was 2nd runner for N Spokane. A number of runners struggled. Tuohy was still 1st.

exactly. he was very impressive today.
1 - 163 - Katelyn Tuohy
2 - 163 - Taylor Ewert
3 - 163 - Sydney Thorvaldson
4 - 160 - Claire Walters
5 - 157 - Marlee Starliper
6 - 157 - Carlie Dorostkar
7 - 156 - Brooke Rauber
8 - 156 - Charlotte Bednar
I think Tuohy looked great in the leadup to the race. I think she is fitter than last year at this time. But what was very easy to lose sight of was the pressure. She has been so dominate and so historic that if she lost this race would have become a blemish on her accomplishments, insane as that is to consider. That is how high she set the bar for herself. On top of that is going for a third championship, which has never been done before. That is heady stuff for a 17 year old high school athlete to handle. That much stress can do a number on you, and the body might react strangely. Then you add the conditions and a tough field that was going to go for broke. All the sudden that extra gear suddenly disappears. In retrospect it was perfect conditions for an upset. But dug deep and won anyway.
Not sure where to ask this, figured I'd try this thread. I never really followed HS XC, even when in HS. Some of my training partners ran for the team but this was when Nike was not well-established in the HS running world. In fact, I didn't (and I'd guess the guys I hung out with could say the same) own a spiked shoe in those days. So, I really am a fish out of water about this topic, so here's the question:
Do all the runners in NXN wear Nike shoes in the race?
I mean generally and every year more so than this year specifically.
What about FL?
100% Nike there, or some other scenario?
Nico Young's margin was second best at NXN among the boys, and a course record.
2004 Sean McNamara won by 11.6 seconds in 15:43 over Brandon Bethke
2005 Kenny Klotz won by 3.6 seconds in 16:25.8 over Jack Bolas
2006 Steve Murdock won by 10.9 seconds in 16:26 over Ben Johnson, with a 202 speed rating!-must have been muddy. (Colby Lowe was fourth after Mike Cybulski)
2007 Chris Derrick beat Colby Lowe by 3 seconds in 15:39 (Johnson was third)
2008 Reed Connor beat Jakub Zivuc by 4.5 seconds in 15:13
2009 Craig Lutz beat Elias Gedyon by 0.3 seconds in 15:09
2010 Lukas Verzbicas beat Edward Cheserek by 2.3 seconds in 15:59 (Lutz third, three more seconds back)
2011 Here was the only bigger margin, 24 seconds as Futsum Zienasellaissie won by 24 seconds over Dan Vertiz (future 3:53 college miler Izaic Yorks in fourth):
Boys Championship Race
1 206 Futsum Zeinasellaissie M MIDWEST-1 15:03 4:51
2 258 Daniel Vertiz M SOUTH-1 15:27 4:59
3 260 Craig Nowak M SOUTH-3 15:27 4:59
4 212 Izaic Yorks M NORTHWEST-2 15:30 5:00
2012 Sam Wharton won by 3 seconds over Estevan Dellarosa in 17:06
2013 Taylor Wilmot beat Blake Haney by 3 seconds in 15:00, which looks to be the second fastest time ever
2014 Tanner Anderson by two seconds over Olin Hacker in 15:11
2015 Casey Clinger over Ben Veatch by 1.6 seconds in a fast 15:03
2016 Clinger over Sam Worley by 6.7 seconds in 15:28
2017 Aidan Troutner over Brodey Hasty (3rd in 2016) by 2 seconds in 15:03.9
2018 Liam Anderson over Cole Hocker, Cole Sprout, and Nico Young (15:04) by three seconds in a course record 14:57.6
2019 Nico Young by 13.8 seconds over Josh Methner in new course record of 14:52.
100%, I was hoping with her teammate their the stress might have helped her. All season you could see the stress. I think winning at first was fun, but now she set the bar so high people have such high expectations. I mean she won her third NXN title and instead of people celebrating , they write how she is burning out.
With her speed rating, it is obvious that her race was not up to par. The only other time the stress got to Touhy seemed to be last year with her course work in school (I think she was in a lot of AP classes).
Touhy ran with real guts today. Congrats to her for a undefeated 3 seasons.
25 guys at 190+ on Tullyrunners. Greatest high school race ever? Has to be.
Gatorade goes by looking at the whole season
It's the cross-country athlete of the year
They don't just look at One race
They also look at GPA and things like volunteering. At least they do for the state Awards. But I'm pretty sure for the national awards they're just going to go with the strongest Runner. There's no one else conceivable who could challenge Tuohy
Even if someone has a great Foot Locker and wins they're not going to have the overall resume
Especially with Tuohy winning that race in Crazy conditions over a great field

Something like that. Got it wrong right near the beginning.
Great comments, very insightful!
Yeah Tuohy is awesome! Super Runner, great kid, works really hard and looks out for a teammates
The conditions and the stress was crazy. She still had a great year and is right where she needs to be for continued success. What an awesome kid let's appreciate what she accomplished
