Can we get over this idea that adults in students lives shouldn't interact with them on social media or text them. Sure it can be abuse but the people saying it should never be done are stuck in the stone ages. They don't realize that is how teens interact and communicate. If you want to be able to have a relationship with them and communicate with them you need to do it on their level, if you try to force them into other forms of communication you will get resentment and the doors will close.
Obviously don't be a creep and there needs to be some checks and balances but those are all possible. Use group texts, etc...
Social media you really shouldn't have to worry about, it's all out there. So don't act weird on it and you're fine.
THIS. Every clinic that i go to promotes social media interaction and texting with your athletes and outlines how you can safeguard yourself while doing it. It is the only way to stay socially relevant with a younger generation. If you share what should be shared and stay away from the drama and controversial topics, you are fine. No one wants to see that anyway, not even your ever-patient family members on Facebook.
Agreed!

In a matter of days there is an album of HS track-cc photos and then an advertisement picture of a 16oz full beer being poured from a craft beer tap. Then basically every other non-picture there is a beer in his hand with him -- a self proclaimed beer snob -- pointing the label of the beer can or bottle directly at the camera and makes it a focal point of the picture. That and he likes and visits every local craft brewery doing the same thing.
In my opinion there is just too much crossover between roles. I myself go out, act social and have friends but I am extremely careful about what I do in front of kids.
It is not cool to be advertising alcohol to kids.
Pictures of craft beers doesnt sound too egregious. These kids are seeing alcohol promotions on tv, on YouTube ads, billboards, etc all the time. Those depictions are generally promoting binge drinking, even if they are careful to add the "drink responsibly" in tiny letters.
Meanwhile it sounds like your coach is depicting himself drinking a limited amount of craft beer.
I think the only issue here is that he shouldnt be posting pictures of high school kids in an open social media setting. He also shouldnt be "friends" on social media with the kids.
Our district requires us to either not post any pictures to social media or set up a closed group only for members of the track team and parents. Our closed group allows coaches and parents to share photos to each other from our events. The kids pretty much arent interested in joining, so it ends up being just the parents and coaches. Nobody has to be "friends" or "following" anybody else to see the photos this way.

No you arent.
If you say so amigo.
What's the deal? Mad because 1 of my 2 kids that made it to nats ended up outrunning your kids?
If you are who I think you are, We look forward to see you at indoor nats.
As a coach at a university in the lone star state, I can tell you that I do not add my runners to my fb page, nor do I speak to them on the cell phone, as those things are considered very sexually inappropriate and unprofessional.
Now, once they graduate, feel free to add them or text them or meet up with them privately. But do not have any electronic communication with them while they are your student athlete.
The only time you should speak to them on the phone is if they call your office phone to tell you they are sick and wont be at practice that day.

Whoa. No, I literally dont believe you coach at a university. You seem to think I'm a rival coach. If I was, I wouldn't be accusing you of lying about being a coach, since then I'd have to believe you were a coach to be a rival coach... it's takes some kind of weird logic to accuse me of being a rival coach, when I'm accusing you of not being a coach at all.
Anyway, if you really are a coach at a "major university," why cant I find your name listed as a coach on any of the websites for the major universities in that town?
Why dont you have the position listed on your facebook? Linkedin?

What about if you're dressed up as darth Vader for halloween, so the only way you can communicate with anybody is using your electronic mouthpiece vocoder thing. Then would it be ok to have electronic communications with them? It's just for one day, afterall. Well, unless Halloween is like on a Monday, because then you have to also do halloween the previous friday and Saturday nights, so on those years it's really like 3 days. But they're not consecutive days, because you don't usually do halloween on sunday those days. And really, most people only do Friday or Saturday, not both, so the clubs end up having to do parties both days with half the number of people. Its better when halloween is on a friday night. They should just change the calendar so that october 31st is always a Friday night. Plus its better for the little kids who want to wear their costumes at school, but dont want to feel awkward when they show up and more than half the school isnt dressed up. That kind of embarrassing awkwardness can be really scarring. It is the kind of thing that really sticks with you, then you end up sending emails to newspapers pretending to be your dad for an article claiming some White House official assaulted you because you got beat up by somebody after you started the fight. So yeah, halloween is pretty important, I think it's ok to talk to your athlete with electronic communications if it is for the purpose of halloween.

Most teachers/coaches dont list their profession on social media for safety reasons, and also for fear of being reported to the school if they post something that someone disagrees with. This is pretty common knowledge.

His social media is open and has his real name and picture on it. So that cant be the reason. And he certainly does have a lot of things on his facebook some people would disagree with, so if that was going to be an issue, its presumably already happened.
Even if that were the reason, he could still have a linkedin account, there shouldnt be anything on their to offend anybody.
And even without linkedin, what "major university" doesnt have at least a roster online?

OK millennial. That response was clever the first few million times it was used. Try to think for yourself, if possible.

Mine.
I coach at a D2 college in the midwest in a somewhat large city. My college hasn't updated their Xc page online in nearly 2 years. It is not uncommon to find XC teams online that have their old retired coach on the website, and it not list their current roster or schedule. There are a few colleges in Ohio and Indiana (my home state) that dont list or show their coach at all.
T'would not surprise me if this guys school has done the same, hasn't updated because they are just seeing whether hes a temporary or permanent fix for the coaching role, or just flat out prioritize academics over athletics. Which is the correct philosophy anyways.
Kudos to this guy for keeping his coaching gig off social media. But keep in mind, it may be just a gig. The university can clean house at any time and replace him for any reason they sit fit. Only God knows whether he will stay in S A., or be a floater who floats around from school to school like other unimpressive coaches have done.
Only time will tell.
I, myself, am now interested and anxious to see what the rest of his career upholds and unfolds. Take care.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
