Is there a reason everyone says to adjust the grade rather than just making it a little faster?
IMO, it’s a moot point as the lack of air resistance is easily compensated by the increased sweating due to the same lack of air resistance which has the effect of moving the heat you’re emitting away from your body.
TBT, I used to be a tread non-believer until I trained for a winter half mostly on one and did well.

for me it hurts my hip. Idk why but whenever I run on it I get this tight hip. Happening for years. It's clearly not the same mechanics as if I'm running outside. Would love to use it as a tool for training because mentally I don't mind. I live in a hilly area and it's hard to get faster runs in unless you can get on a track which is usually only Sunday so for me I wish I could make it work.
I never got to talk to an elite long distance runner, so all my conversations were people who run sub 3 or around 2:40. They all tend to underestimate the treadmill, and even on a disgusting cold windy day they run outside, as though a workout on a treadmill is a wasted workout. Why is that? I run both outside and on a treadmill, and mechanically I can’t see any significant difference. The treadmill is great and can give you great workouts and great shape. I’m not saying only treadmill, but why not use this great asset? They tend to say that they would only run on it as a last option. Is this some kind of showing off by sub elite people?
I CAN'T TELL IF THIS IS A TROLL ATTEMPT OR NOT BUT TREADMILLS ARE TERRIBLE FOR YOUR FOOT MUSCLES AND BONES BECAUSE YOU DID NOT EVOLVE TO RUN ON A PERFECTLY STRAIGHT PERFECTLY EVEN SURFACE. EVEN IF YOU MODERATE THE INCLINE YOU ARE NOT UTILIZING SUPPORTING MUSCLES WHICH CAN BE EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO INJURY IF TRAINING AT MAXIMUM CAPACITY. FURTHERMORE THE AIR INSIDE IS STALE AND ROTTEN AND NOT GOOD FOR YOUR LUNGS AND YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO GET SICK SPENDING EXTENSIVE TIME HEAVING INDOOR AIR WHETHER IT'S A GYM OR YOUR HOME. A TREADMILL IS AN ABSOLUTE WORST CASE OPTION IN CASE OF A SMALL APOCALYPSE OR ARMED UPRISING OR OUTDOOR AIRBORNE PATHOGEN PREVENTING YOUR NORMAL RUN. OUTSIDE OF THRESHOLD INSIDE AN ACTIVE VOLCANO THERE ARE LITERALLY NO CLIMATALOGICAL CONDITIONS ON EARTH THAT ARE WORSE FOR YOUR BODY THAN A TREADMILL.
We purchased a Nordic track 1750 a couple months ago and included the iFIT program. There are hundreds of runs and training series to choose from and they are fun to do whether beginner or advanced runner. One thing I like is it declines to -3.0 %.
It doesn’t replace outdoor training but when time or weather restrictions occur I can simulate what I planned outside fairly well.
Or heck, maybe just do a recovery on the beach in Maui
Was it Gerry Lindgren who used to do a major portion of his mileage on a manual treadmill?
If someone hasn’t yet responded after four years, I believe 1968 Olympian and author Ron Daws did a lot of mileage during Minneapolis winters on a manual treadmill.

I have a NordicTrack incline treadmill that goes up to 40%, not that I set it to anywhere near that high (bought it from a friend), but I do like that it declines as well. I'm too cheap to pay for iFIT, so I usually find indoor cycling workouts on YouTube to follow along with. They go off effort levels 1-10, so even at an easy pace, I can vary it to break up the monotony of running one pace.
My main complaint with treadmills is that they are usually not calibrated correctly. I have a Runn Smart sensor on my home treadmill that I use with Zwift, but if I'm on a gym treadmill, it's a crapshoot. Using the "indoor run" option on my Coros 2 watch is all over the place as well if I'm doing any sort of workout.
