I remember him well- a great runner. RIP
A real tragedy for the family as his brother passed away only a few weeks before. Paul was a real good guy, always engaged at anything he did. He seemed as fit as a fiddle but a blood clot in his lungs precipitated his demise. RIP Paul. One of the best Track and Field News covers ever -- Geis defeating John Ngeno (WSU) in a dual meet as his best friend Scott Daggett gleefully charging the track to share the victory.
This one caught us all by surprise...

Wow! This sure is a surprise. He somehow occasionally turned up on my Facebook page and there was nothing that indicated anything was wrong. So sad. RIP.
Wow, way too young. He was going to be the "next Pre," which was an unfair expectation, and he was pretty good. RIP.

He was never a teammate of Pre. He transferred from Rice and was inneligible during Pre's last year of running for Oregon
I was in HS when he was at Oregon and I was a big fan. He was kind of like Pre in that he looked pretty cool looking and confident.
Pre took some mild shots at Geis in public but I've read that they were actually close and Geis was devasted when Pre died.

Not to nitpick but I think most of us who ran D1 back then were used to people coming and going all the time... transferring in, transferring out, retiring due to injury, kicked out for academics, etc. I considered these guys teammates even if they never suited up in a meet when I did, because they had a locker in the team locker room, they were on the roster (yes, maybe with an asterisk next to their name), and they worked out and partied with us.
Great photo, I remember it well! RIP

He went to Rice, then Oregon then got his MBA at Stanford. He was involved in the investment industry. CPA, MBA and CFP.
Is there an official cause of death?
Loved that guy's crazy spirit, RIP and condolences to those who were truly close to him.
Does Geis rhyme with nice or peace? Geis was not exactly given much attention when you consider that he was just one rung below Pre in terms of Oregon runners of that era.
Nice

As in 'nice'....but not the city in the south of France
Thanks guys. Oregon Live says Geis apparently died of a pulmonary embolism, sort of what Malmo was saying.
