It’s a ploy to take attention away from all the Kenyans doping.
Fixed
It's a shame because Jakob had a better chance at getting a medal than Butchart. But that was a DQ- he needed to pop right back onto the track rather than steadily moving back towards the track for it to have been acceptable.
Overall it works out well because the double was probably a little beyond Jakob at this point in time.
Latest from Norwegian Athletics:
Jakob is hungry.
BRING THAT GUY SOME FOOD
The spokesperson came and asked the journalist for candy :P
Mo Farah has done similar things in the 10000. No DQ. I wonder if Seb Coe has anything to do with this?
No joke. He is really hungry - how hard can it be to get him a banana?!??!
he has been out doing a cooldown. Now just watching his phone and chilling.
Looking at latest cam from NRK maybe a dq is correct. However it is a big loss for the WC. Diversity in the medals of a 5k is very welcome to track and field.

Jakob was able to overtake by running on the inside of the railing. Pretty stupid move and the DQ is fully deserved. But he is young and inexperienced.
That said, I hope the DQ is overturned as I'd like to see him in the final.
Agreed with this. I do think the final would be more exciting with him in it, even if he would just be fighting for bronze at best.
This thread is funny, though. When idiots say things like Jakob is the saviour of the sport, he's going to have a lot of detractors based on those comments. So it just polarizes people's opinions of him and this is the resulting shouting match. Good for Letsrun's pockets, at least.
Is he still DQ’d? Not up to date on this. Sadly I think it’s deserved, he pushed too tight of a gap.

He is used to a lot of races in a short time (remember he did three distances at European U20 Champs and four at National Championships before), I don't think he would have had any problem with it. Actually the 5000m might have been his better chance to excel (he won't do good in a slow 1500m final..), so it doesn't work out really well.
What if in the future, steps on inside of rails could be a time penalty (2 or 3 seconds depending on steps?) instead of instant DQ? This would take away the advantage gained but also not unnecessarily punish a smaller infraction. I still don’t think Ingebrigsten would make it in this instance, but it seems like it could protect future similar situations when the athlete clearly is faster than the next person up
NOT DQ!!!!!
HE JUST TOLD HIMSELF LIVE ON NORWEGIAN TV!
Dq revoked. He is qualified.
Jakob is un-DQed again...
Well well well. The last word wasn't said after all.

Wait they are a sponsor? I thought this was a coca cola event?

He got bumped. Reminiscent of Farah in the 2017 10,000. Let him continue.
Yes. The track races that have some congestion and pushing should allow a case like this where he takes a few steps inside the rail, avoids a confrontation or escalation of pushing, and gets no measurable advantage .
Andrew Butchart can race the final if he wants to according to Norwegian Atheletics president
So expect to see Andrew Butchart in the final ;)
The whole deal was arranged so that seb coe had an excuse to include a brit.
Everybody happy then.

Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
