It breaks my heart to write this, but I have to scratch from this weekend’s World Championships in Doha, Qatar due to an injury in my hip that I can’t seem to shake. ?
I still traveled to Doha and am here to cheer on my @usatf and @bowermantc teammates. ?? They’re ready to do great things and I’m here to witness! My stories and posts this week will be all about what it’s like to be at a World Championships, so I hope you enjoy following along.
More info on the injury: My last workout was Aug 30th, one month ago. I got an MRI shortly after that, took a bunch of time off, left Park City where I was training at altitude with my team, and spent 2 weeks in Phoenix seeing my favorite doctor. While I’ve finally been able to do a little running in the last week or so, hurdling in tomorrow’s prelim is out of the question for me.
I’ve struggled with plenty of injuries before, but this has been the most challenging injury in my career thus far. Here’s why.
-This photo is from 2015 when I qualified for my first World Champs straight out of college. I was grateful to make the finals that year and hold my own on an international level for the first time. I walked away with 12th place knowing I could improve.
-In 2016 I suffered multiple injuries during my first full year as a pro, but got healthy before the Olympic Trials and earned the title “Olympian.” I finished 8th in Rio- improvement from Beijing but I still had bigger goals. I wanted more.
-In 2017, many of you commiserated with my feeling robbed of a spot in the finals at the London World Championships when I got disqualified in the prelims. Watching my Team USA steeplechase teammates go 1-2 in the finals was both inspiring and frustrating to watch from the sidelines.
I told myself in 2017 that I would come back for the next World Champs with a vengeance, making up for the disappointment in London. So I had a lot riding on this year in Doha, which makes it even more difficult to admit that I won’t even be able to get to the starting line.
THANK YOU to my doctors, teammates, coaches, friends, and family for supporting me through this latest battle. I will be back for Tokyo in less than a year!
