2-flat shape?? What?! Does he think he's Eliud Kipchoge, or something?? A 2-flat marathon??!!
Oh...800 meters...never mind.

That's why the true "predictor" workout is 4x400 with 4:00 rest.
Nobody said that 3x400 is a "predictor," did they??
Nick Symmonds did.
Nick is nothing by LR standards. He ran D3.

Discus.
That workout predicts nothing for a chubby, out of shape guy that's been running 100s, dribbling basketballs and sprinting in ski boots. You are correct in saying 2:05, it might even be slower. I hope it's on video because the positive split he runs will be hilarious and his last 200 meter implosion will be epic! I'm thinking he'll run something like 59/66
That’s great advice thank you!

Hey that’s a lot faster than most!

Most what... high school JV Team members?

I don't understand how he was in 2:30 shape a few months ago. I've never run sub-2 but I have run sub-2:10 without running for months beforehand, and just doing a few hours of cross-training per week. Even in my worst shape I can run 4:40/mile off the couch, I could run 2:30 in jeans. How is it that Symmonds, a low 3:3X 1500m guy, can get so out of shape so quickly?
Man, everyone is different. He's probably heavier as well, which doesn't help.
I ran 3:44 for 1500m and within a few years of still being reasonably active, I raced a 5k all out in 19:20. It went really fast for me.

that person is probably new here.
Who cares how fast he runs? He doesn’t represent Team USA anymore.

Would you say you are more of a fast twitch oriented, 800/1500 type runner?

Big fan of Nick as an athlete and impressed by this workout! Having said that, I'm a 1:58 guy and could have run 57/58's no problem for this....not sure its a great predictor
4:00 rest seems like too much right? I could see more like 1:00 rest being an accurate predictor.
3x400 with 4min rest is a workout but not a good predictor. It's strange that he calls it to be the best predictor workout. Perhaps it worked just for him. 1200m in total and 8min of rest - hhmmm. Even 8x200/1min rest seems to be harder and it's said to be a pretty bad predictor workout.
I remember that Frank Horwill mentioned that 4x400 with 3min at target 800m pace is a real predictor. Never have done it, must be a killer. But Horwill's athletes are also endurance beasts.
i am running always my intervals with a standing start and i am used to start after i have heared the start signal of the stopwatch. makes a difference, i guess.

Lol, you try that workout and get back to us.
Nick is right when he talks about this workout being harder than racing an 800. I've always found 3x400 w/4min rests to be a fairly accurate predictor for an endurance 800 guy, but it's far less accurate for the speed-oriented guys.

90% is way too high. Don’t be ridiculous.

4x400 at 800 pace with 3 mins rest sounds awful. Ive done it with 5 minutes rest, and it was one of the most intense workouts ive done. maybe THE most intense.
I have read some comments from people who are experienced runners about this workout and thought about it. I guess it is a quite good predictor, if the runner tries hard to match target race pace as accurate as possible, tries to run the second and the third 400 just a little bit faster than the previous one (and avoids huge differences between the splits) and has more or less the feeling at the end that the last one really was the best possible.
There is no perfect predictor workout but this one is not bad.
