yeah break it off.
she doesnt have a 401k, you do. when you get a divorce she'll get half of yours and you'll get half of hers (which is zero).

Call me crazy, but i just get this sense of a love that know no bounds between you two young souls. May you mingle your assets in a joint interest bearing account and find courage in knowing that there isn't any obstacle that a well worded pre-nuptial agreement can't withstand.
I’ve made it through med school and most of residency so far, so I think it’s reasonable to say that I am at least semi intelligent and I’m set up for a decent/stable financial future. I honestly could only explain a 401K in the vaguest terms. I know it’s a retirement account. I’m pretty sure it gives some kind of tax benefit relative to simply directly investing in funds/stocks/bonds. That’s as deep as my knowledge on the topic runs.
I’d think it was dumb if a girl broke up with me over my limited knowledge of a topic that isn’t particularly relevant to me just yet, but I’d also consider it to be a dodged bullet. I’d say do this girl a favor and end it.
HEy doc, ever seen a guy with a piggy bank where his heart is supposed to be?

This girl I've been dating is 33 . . .
Girls are under 18 years old. So it is certainly not true that you have been dating a girl who is 33.
It is probably not true that you have been dating at all.
Maybe she’s self-employed and successful? Hope she dumps your worthless áss.
I hope she didn't think that 401k is an ultra marathon.
I read my OP again and am a bit surprised with my language. I was in a really bad mood when I wrote it due to some other things that were going on at the time of the writing. My question still stands though. I should elaborate that this person does indeed work for a company that offers a 401k but that contributing to it was never a consideration because of how little money she has as it is. From what I can tell, she lives paycheck and to paycheck, though I don't really know what's going on with the money because she doesn't buy a ton of stuff, nor doe she work a crappy job (though it is a lower paying job). It seems to me that someone that age who is living paycheck to paycheck and has no clue what any retirement accounts are (401k, IRA, whatever), is someone who doesn't really have any brains about practical life matters. It's not about being obsessed with money. It's about thinking about life and planning in a way so you don't end up totally screwed.
is OP being criticized by women or white knights ITT?
here's a fun one
ask a woman in your life when the five following wars happened:
1. Revolutionary War
2. Civil War
3. World War 1
4. World War 2
5. Vietnam War
first of all, there is no reason to ever deal with a chick older than 20 or heavier than 105
She's faster than you, isn't she?! That's it, isn't it? She's a chick and she is a faster runner than you, and you can't take it. Admit it, eyeballs, and stop with the financial literacy bull crap.
I bet the conversation really went down more like:
OP: let me show you about the size my 401k.
Girl: that's really small. not impressed.
Anyone who is telling you anything than dump her doesn’t have a 401k either and is definitely under 30.
At 33 she should be an adult, have a real job and have started saving for retirement. If she doesn’t, then she’s not prepared to be an adult. She will rely on you financially for everything including paying her massive credit card debt and student loans (unless her parents coddled her so much they paid them for her). It will become a bigger and bigger issue every. Single. Day.

Don't know when they happened but I know which one we lost.

This. and.../thread.
Yes. You’re clearly too intelligent for other humans. Drop her and hang out with your broker

Not really a surprise here, when you consider the level of support for the insane economic programs offered by the democratic party.
I bet she plans to vote for Bernie and worships AOC too.
The vast majority of people would be better off. That said I'm supporting Yang at the moment over Bernie.
